I'm new to shooting and delivering HD

Hi people,

Excuse me for probably asking a stupid question, but here goes:

I'm about to buy an HD camera, but I understand that the current DVD-players don't actually support HD. So even though I've shot the footage in HD, if I'm going to burn it to DVD, I will have to deliver it in SD, right?

What would the output resolution be? Can that still be 1080?

Thanks in advance!

If you burn it to dvd as a dvd video. Then you will have rendered out an mpeg 2. and it will be standard def, yes. ntsc 720x480, or whatever it is for pal.

You could also do a wmvHD render and burn it. Folks with the capability could watch it on their computers, but it would not work on a regular dvd player.

The options currently available for Hi Def DVD output would be blu-ray and HD-DVD. If you have one of those very expensive burners and your clients have one of those very expensive players.

Otherwise, by creating a DVD video, you are making it standard def.

Hope that makes sense,
Jason

Thanks, Ramjet! That's exactly what I wanted to know.
I guess most of the projects will go on DVD, but I'll probably buy a Blu-ray burner sooner or later.

I'd hold off on buying Blu ray or any of the other HD DVD players, at least until the dust settles and a standard is established. Blu ray seems to be the front runner, but you don't want to drop a bundle on the LaserDisk of the new Milennium.

Agreed. But if you need to be on the cutting edge.... Or if a specific client has a demand for it, charge him/her enough to cover the cost of buying one:) Otherwise, the general consensus is that both formats are running on borrowed time. "Too Little, Too Late" is something I have often heard. Better things are on the way. But that is opinion, anyways. So, it's entirely up to you.

I have one of those DVD player that can read the video files on the DVD. So instead of burning to mpeg2 I just render out as wmv with HD res and have the player read that. Works fine on my HDTV.
