Shooting W/hvx-200 And Using Fcp 5...

Here's my question...what's the best way to edit the HD footage that the HVX-200 shoots? 2 give more detail about what I'm talking about...some people shoot using the HVX-200 AND then import the HD footage into their computer or external harddrive and begin to edit it out. But, using this system the computer seems to crash more, and it's high end computers were talking about here. Now someone said that you can shoot using the HVX-200 in HD mode(720p or 1080i) edit the footage in dv and then export the final cut in hd.....??? I've asked around and have got many different answers, that's why I'm taking my question to DVXUSER members. Some say it has something to do with timecode, some say the computer just knows how to do it, some say down-convert the footage on import and then export in HD? None of this makes any sense to me....please help. I know when shooting with film they edit in dv and then match up the timecode for the cuts, that's the only thing I could think of. IF THIS IS POSSIBLE WHAT ARE THE STEPS AND HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT DOING IT???

thanks,
tom

1) Can you get more detailed with the specifications of the computer you are using to edit the DVCPro HD footage (processor, RAM, hdd setup, etc.)?

2) Consider the HVX-200 files are already digital files, they're not specifically really mean to be edited in DV. I suppose you could do a like a batch quicktime conversion on them to DV quality and edit that. I'm not sure how you'd maintain timecode then though. I think if you shoot entirely on the HVX you're best off to just edit it at full resolution.

However, personally, we are doing an offline/online workflow and use the HVX as a complimentary camera to our Varicam. What I do to deal with the HVX footage is firewire the HVX to an AJ-HD1200A and record the footage onto DVCPro HD cassettes. I can then use the AJ-HD1200A and our BlackMagic card to bring the footage in at an offline resolution (we use JPEG at a reduced quality setting). That works great for us, but might be a large added expense for HVX only shoot.

cheers.

Ok, what Mac are you using, what's your hardware configuration? FCP handles P2 footage very well. Not clear about when/how your Mac crashes, or what you mean by crash, need to be more specific about the problem. On the surface, it doesn't sound like a normal Mac/FCP issue.

Once you down grade HD footage to SD (DV), it's SD, you've lost a ton of image data that can NOT be retrieved. There's no need to use SD as an off-line editing solution for DVCPRO-HD, as Macs and FCP handle DVCPRO-HD extreamly well. HDV, well, all NLEs have issues with HDV, period.

First up, are you on FCP 5.1.2? Use the P2 Import window to get your footage, then edit it, then go out to DVD. Very straight forward, many of us are doing that daily with no problem. Timecode does not make your system crash, period. If your system is crashing, you need to concentrate on that, and give us lots of details.

So Ben are you okay w/ the HVX 200 again? Or are you still having issues w/ the footage/Apple's driver? Never saw if you resolved that to your satisfaction or not.

cheers.
