24p footage slightly off in FCP

I have some 24p footage shot in advanced mode with the DVX100a. It's been color corrected professionally and outputted as a 720x486 uncompressed .mov. When I play it in quicktime, it looks perfect, all the matting is fine and the size is right. When import it into FCP, the top and bottom are matted right but on the sides, there is black. So instead of stretching the picture to the borders of the canvas, it is more like a square. The aspect ratio looks ok but I'm still worried. The sequence settings are at 720x480 (does it matter if it's not 486?) and 23.98 so all should be correct. When I open the file in the Viewer, it has grey checkered blocks on the right and left sides. How do I correct this so that when I output, it will look correct?
thanks

About how many pixels of checkerboard are there... 20 or 75 on each side??

You might want to load it in the viewer and check Motion tab... Distort... Aspect Ratio and see if it's set to 0.00 or not.

In the Viewer, there are about 5.5 squares from left to right on each side of the picture. They go all the way up and down the sides.
I checked the Motion/Distort Tab it says 33.3 in Aspect Ratio. Why would it say that and should I change it to 0.0?
thanks

It seems that your sequence is set to anamorphic and either your footage is or isn't.

Select the sequence in the browser and hit Apple-Zero. This will open the preferences -- UN check the anamorphic check and see if that doesn't help.

You might then need to set the aspect ratio to 0.

However -- you might indeed have anamorphic video to begin with in which you'd need to change it to 0.00 and keep going... but that isn't what you said above.

I definitely shot my footage anamorphic. When I set the Aspect Ratio from 33.3 to 0, it made it look correct. Is this all I need to do?
do you know why it came in with 33.3 instead of 0? I've always had the anamorphic box checked every step of the way because it's 1.85:1
thanks
