Toyota Tacoma commercials - How'd they do that?

You know those commercials where the Toyota Tacoma pickup is eaten and spit out by the Lockness monster, thrown off a cliff on a beach and lands straight up, is hit by an asteroid and survives? How do they do those commercials? They look like they should be cheap since the tape stock they shoot on is cheap, but are those actual effects complicated? Or is it just all an animator and CGI? Either way, those are my favorite commercials of the past couple of years.

Several years ago, I was with Digital Domain's commercial division, where we did those Auto Trader ads with thousands of cars that zip back and forth and sideways, a la 'The Matrix' (we need guns...) in one spot, and another where SUVs come flipping up out of the floor (all as the buyer refines his search for the car/SUV he wants).

The spots were simpler in terms of movement and environment, than the Tacoma ads, but there were no real cars in the scene - we just shot b/g plates, plus the actors as a separate element; the cars/SUVs were all digital models (Lightwave 3D) and it was composited with a proprietary tool called Nuke.

Maybe a basically similar approach going on, here.
