New Line develops Hobbit and LOTR prequel w/ out Peter Jackson

Let me begin by stating that I am a huge Tolkien fan. That being said, PJ and his team did a wonderful job with LOTR. But, I've got to admit, I'd like to see another perspective on the material.

Now, this of course depends on the studios hiring the right team. But I don't think its the end of the world that Peter Jackson won't be directing the prequels.

Michael Bay presents:

The Hobbit- With even less plot and even more explosions than you thought possible.

DOOOOOOMED!

I suppose this really isn't surprising. I suspected that something like this might happen because of the lawsuit.

I'm a huge Tolkien fan too and while I think WETA did a great job with the visual effects, I was less impressed with job done from a story point of view. It was good in places, poor in others. Fellowship of the Ring is the best of the three in my opinion.

I do wonder who they will get to direct these next two movies... and my god it had better not be Michael Bay TC!

I liked the LOTR films very much, but then again I was never able to make it further than 30 pages into 'Two Towers...'

Among my friends who are into the books, the more they love the books, the less they cared for the films.

It might be interesting to see what Bay would do with 'The Hobbit,' if only to see what things are like in an alternate universe where JRR Tolkien was an ADD-suffering coke-weasel...

Dang!

Oh hey! Maybe they can get Will Smith to star in it, right after he finishes I Am Legend. :crybaby:

"Oh no you didn't!"

Sorry, gratuitous Will Smith reference. I should know better.
Personally I can't stand the guy.

I like Peter Jackson's version. Hopefully the next guy will do it justice.

OMG!! I've got it. QT to direct The Hobbit!!! Imagine the dialogue, opening with all the hobbits sitting around a table talking about Madonna's "Like a Virgin"

Ok....

I'll do it....but seriously Ive been telling my agent not to send me out on these fantasy movies! They should give these kind of movies over to M. Night.......ha ha ha!!!! :nads:

OK, that settles it. They already made several video games out of the LOTR franchise, so it's time for Uwe Boll to direct one!

**Vomits prodigiously**

The question here is, "How much is Jackson's involvement worth?" I think the overall feel and the track record he brings to The Hobbit is worth somewhere in the vicinity of $100-150 million. Which is ironic in that he also had about that many endings in The Return Of The King. But I digress. My suspicion is that whatever he's suing for is more than that. Simple economics. How much money he's suing for is more, overall, than how much money he brings to the box office. You also take into consideration that he'll ask for $20-30 million more (including backend) than any other director our there and that brings his 'worth' to $80-120 million. Which is ironic in that that's about how long he had the hobbits jumping on the bed for in The Return Of The King.

I'm not a fan of these movies. But there is no question that nobody even comes close to Jackson in his love and knowledge and ability as a director in these films. It would be a huge mistake not to hire him. And I'm gonna say that we haven't seen the end of this story. When they look down their list of directors and say, "This is who we have???", they're gonna wise up and come crawling back to PJ.

But if they don't, good luck New Line/MGM/Miramax. Or whoever the hell has these films.

...he is fed up with the studios: to get his profit share on the Rings trilogy he had to sue New Line. With us, in contrast, he knows that he will be paid fairly and artistically supported without reservation.

Fed up with the studios, eh? Who is it besides the studios that has the bank roll to support these films?

This is going to get interesting...

Could be interesting to see a LOTR story told a la "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow;" not offering it as a marvel of storytelling, but it was an example of one way to tell a grand, F/X laden story, without reliance on traditional big-money studio resources and financing.

How much money he's suing for is more, overall, than how much money he brings to the box office.

How much money do you think they'll lose when the LoTR fans boycott the movie because Jackson isn't directing it? And which director do you think will want to step into his shoes?

Maybe it will be a Uwe Boll movie after all.

Kevin Smith directs Hobbits- two hours of Hobbits talking about Star Wars, smoking, and lots of D*^# and Fart jokes, and some J.R. Toking references. One Bong to stone them all!
