YouTube brings out the worst in people

True, but once someone makes a fair sum of money off these kinds of videos, we're going to see more and more destructive videos that push the limits.

How long until we see:

smashmyfatherscar.com
microwavemycat.com
shovemygrandmadownthestairs.com

and the surefire top ten hit:
slapmyneighbourswife.com

There's a difference between destroying your own property and commiting a crime. Those are just typical extreme cases to prove a point. The stunts are pretty harmless.

I agree with Morten. What's sad is that Youtube may actually encourages stupid/dangerous behavior just to get other people's attention. I read an interview sometime ago about these two teens who posted frequently on youtube. What do they do? They set different parts of their bodies on fire and videotaped it. After one incident they actually ended up in the emergency room with burns all over their arms. When they're interviewed they said that it was "totally worth it" because their videos were huge hits and that they were definitely doing it again, presumably with even more extreme stunts.

finally - a sane person.

Personally, if kids want to light themselves on fire so that people can watch it for free on you tube, let them, all the more power to them, Give them a Darwin Award.
exactly. I don't really care if people flirt with death in extremely stupid ways, it's not like the Earth is suffering from a drastic underpopulation problem.

BTW, here's a link to my crazy youtube video.

You can't blame youtube for people's stupidity. People will do stupid things without youtube, the only difference is that with youtube more people are watching. Youtube is just a trigger, an excuse to blame behavior on.

This reminds me of that ancient DVXuser thread where Jarred chucked a Christmas tree over the balcony railing of his apartment building.

And that video Horse posted of his buddy who lit himself on fire. :)

You know, people were doing stupid things long before YouTube, and believe it or not, even before Jackass. I think that instead of blaming video, you need to blame society. In the old days, stupid people were often eaten by wolves. Problem solved. Nowadays, society protects and coddles the stupid, even allowing them to breed with other stupid people. Then you can hear them and their native call, "Hey y'all, watch this!"

That's freakin' funny! :cheesy: [Notice the lack of trademark symbol that annoys unidentified mod.]

Ahh, the gold standard by which to objectively judge other people's sanity - whether or not they agree with you.

The likely overall level of idiocy probably remains fairly constant - it just appears to rise, the more people have the ability to broadcast their footage of it.

I'm sure this has been said, but a bunch of ****ing retards waiting 18 hours in line for a plastic box that is good for nothing but wasting time, is a much bigger indicator of the decline of society than these guys smashing their own property on video.

P.S. - if this is the thing that really gets you worked up about society, you need to look the **** around. Wow.

Well, it beats having them out and about in the world, clogging up the freeways and making me wait in a longer line at CB&TL...

...and, if I weren't married, I'd also observe that it's less competition in the dating marketplace...to the degree that deep video-game fans are any kind of competition for anything...

...not to mention giving us all here an excuse to feel better about ourselves, by comparison!

So is the original intent of this thread to call for censorship of entities like YouTube or just make a statement about society?
As other have said, YouTube isn't the best barometer for the current state of our society. You certainly don't need to pick on YouTube, JackAss, Consumption Junction, AmIHotOrNot, or any of the others.
As you would expect, the average person in any given population sample is just plain average. Maybe they can't think of anything to do but destroy things or watch TV. Not everyone is making movies, painting masterpieces, or looking for a cure to cancer. Call that an unfair blanket statement , but statistically speaking it's true. It's not meant to put anyone down since it's the old "bell curve of nature" at work.

If you look back through history, people have always found silly ways to waste time, damage property, and act like a fool. They didn't need the internet or a camera. Just think of graffiti or tagging, which dates back to ancient Greece or earlier. It's certainly not a new disturbance or menace.
