Windows Zune Media Player

Has anyone checked this out? The Windows version of the Ipod... my Ipod is outdated by far, so I'm going to get the Zune. 30GB, pictures and video just like Ipod, same price basically, and it'd work better on my laptop than my Ipod would. You can even transfer and hold the songs from your Itunes library in the Zune. Looks cooler too IMO. Anyone else heard of it, and/or getting it?

I just got the 80GB iPod. The picture on it is really nice. Good battery, sounds great. I thought about the 30 GB but for $100 more I thought why not,,,,,

My son is talking about the Zune, but like the idea of 80GB over the 30GB

ya its a bit late, but my ipod is old, and doesnt always work on my laptop so i figured i'd go with the new Microsoft product instead... maybe I'll wait another 5 years and they'll have an 80gb Zune LOL

All the reviews I've read say the same thing:

If you want an iPod, get an iPod.
If you want a Zune, get a Zune.

They are pretty much the same, each has it's own advantages and disadvantages:

The iPod is slighly smaller, has easier navigation and is more stylish. and it works well with Macs

The Zune is larger, has a built in radio, larger screen and wi-fi. Good for Microsoft users.

The important thing to note is that if you have songs you purchased on
iTunes you can't use them on the Zune (only songs you've purchased - if you ripped them off CD you won't have any trouble). This is the same for all non-apple mp3 players and it's only a matter of time before the crack that was created by DVD-Jon becomes widely availabe. Nevertheless it's something you need to consider.

the only point I've heard so far that puts the Zune above the iPod is that while Apple has terrible customer service, Microsoft has excellent customer service so you would assume that if it turns out the Zune has a problem, it'll be easy to get it fixed unlike with the iPod.

But like I said: The are pretty much the same. Don't listen to either Microsoft or Apple fanboys. this one is really too close to call and it boils down to personal preference.

If you have an outdated iPod, why don't you just get an updated iPod?

I think the Zune, like pretty much everything else that Microsoft has made, is garbage and a waste of money. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Again I urge you to not listen to Mac fanboys. All you'll get from them is biassed info. The fact is that regardless of a 5 year delay or not the Zune is comparable to the iPod in every way. The Mac people desperately cling to the illusion that everything with a half-eaten apple on it is better than Microsoft but that's just not the case.

Again: most unbiassed reviews show that the two players are pretty much the same: - and that where one loses out it gains it back with some other function.

To get some unbiassed info check out Gizmodos extensive reviews and comparisons. Their conclusion?

"You want a bigger screen: Zune.
You need an all-you-can-eat subscription service: Zune.
You want a store with a larger music library: iPod.
You want a movie and TV store: iPod.
You want contacts, calendar, notes, stopwatch, and iPod Games: iPod.
You want to be different/want something new: Zune.
Xbox 360 owners who purchase music and want streaming: Zune.
Xbox 360 owners who purchase music and don't want streaming: iPod.
You want a scratch resistant player: Zune.
You want a built-in FM tuner: Zune.
You want a touch-sensitive scroll wheel: iPod."

another good point is that the Zune has no OS X support so if you're on a mac you have to stay with mac products.

I can't stress this enough: The Zune and the iPod are basically the same. Make up your own mind. Don't listen to any fanboys/haters from either side of this war. it's like comparing green and red grapes. they are pretty much the same but also have idividual qualities. and depending on who you are you'll like one more than the other.

just don't let product loyalty and marketing sway you. do the research, try not to be biassed and then decide.

a simple way to make this decision is this: if you already bought tons of songs on iTunes, get a new iPod. if you don't have songs from iTunes and you're on a PC, get a Zune. If you can't make up your mind there are one million other products out there that are equally good - like the iRiver for instance.

*apple doesn't mean perfect*
Uhhhh, I posted the youtube link in reply to Nicholas's comment about Microsoft coming late to the portable media player scene. I thought Ballmer's comments were relevant. I wasn't trying to make the Microsoft guys out to be stupid. If that was my goal, I would have posted this:

Boom.

There's been rumours about the next ipod from Apple being a true video iPod as well as basically making the whole thing a video screen with a click wheel that appears right on the screen then goes away when playing.

I'm sure they'll come out with something to try and keep their market share.

I don't think the rumored full-screen iPod is more than a rumor. most of the mac rumor sites has abandoned the idea and it was shown long ago that the development pictures were a fraud.

What is coming out soon is the iPod phone. question is how an mp3 player turned phone will play in a market saturated by phones turned mp3 players. after all, a cell phone is a very complicated piece of equipment and with all the different standards, extremely fast devellopment changes and an already flooded market it'll be interesting to see if this is an investment that will propell Apple to new heights or sink the big ship.

Look for the middle of January for the release of the 16-9 iPod and a July 07 release of the iPhone with or without the video part.

The built in radio is pretty useless in my mind, because radio is so irrelevant. If it was built in satellite Radio, that would be awesome.

But the one thing they did, which iPod should have had from DAY ONE, and all of these things should have, is the ability to SHARE SONGS from player to player. I think there is some licensing limit, but still just about every week, I'm out with my iPod with some friends, and they have something, or I do, and we're like: "Oh, when I get home, I'll rip you a disk." WAY cooler just to exchange music on the fly.

Except for the songs expiring after three plays. That just sucks but I understand it.

That's strange, all the reviews that I've read have said "just get an iPod."

Yeah, that sucks bad. But I think that will relax over time, and eventually turn into something like when you buy a song, you license it to share with like 3 players, to share with 3 friends. The ****ed up part of this is a functon of a business decision.

But what I always wanted was for an iPod to be able to broadcast, even if not sharing songs, like broadcast like your own personal radio station, and people around you could tune in to you and listen to your broadcast. Thought that would be cool.

I agree. If you want an MP3 player get an iPod.

Since Apple makes much more money with iTunes and selling iPod's than they ever did selling computers, and since they abandoned the G5 in favor of Intel (PC) becuase they couldn't make it comptitive, they must have a great strategy for future iPods. They'll have a lot of free time to figure it out.

How can you go wrong with an iPod. After all, everyone is so enamered with Apples marketing and how they are so well positioned in the digital rights management market for music, how they got the first mover advantage etc., you know like the NEWTON! A little company called Palm beat them stupid.

I'm not bitter or anything, I use my G5 as the other book end with my SGI...:crybaby:

Apple going Intel was like SGI going NT, both companies are rearanging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
