YouTube brings out the worst in people

Noticed how more and more videos of people doing really stupid things are showing up on YouTube? Especially videos of people destroying things? YouTube is really bringing out the very wors in people.

Case in point: SmashMyPS3

These guys had a petition online where people could pledge money and then they went out and preordered a PS3, stood first in line to pick it up, took it outside and destroyed it in front of all the poeple that had been waiting for theirs for days.

In my mind this is crossing the line. I don't think it's funny and they are not trying to make a point - all they want to do is destroy stuff and make people angry about it. had it been a protest against consumerism or an anti-gaming thing it might have been ok but these guys have been destroying stuff other people want for a long time (www.smashmyipod.com, smashmyxbox.com, and smashmywii.com are all owned by the same people).

without the extreme popularity of YouTube this type of antisocial and stupid behaviour would never have been popularized.

I think the social structure of our society is falling apart. an earlier thread was talking about the trash on tv (Bridezillas etc). YouTube gives "normal" people a chance to show off just how stupid they are and disturblingly other people now take after them and try to outdo the stupidity of others.

That's called Devolution

Ha. I don't take it that seriously. I think of this as performance art. I also think that they are making the point that we shouldn't value or take this stuff too seriously. It is just a video game platform. And I think there are much worse things to do than destroy a PS3.

you missed my point: if they are trying to send a message that's one thing, but the fact is they are not. they are just using this to earn money. this is not a political statement or a performance act but a cynical exploitation of people's need to be shocked.

Example: Borat is funny because he uses his own stupidity to bring out the worst in people in such a way that we see what is really going on inside people's heads. It's also funny in an awkward kind of way because we all wonder what would happen if we were put in a simmilar situation. He is making a statement about the modern world and how fake everything is.

these guys on the other hand are smashing expensive hardware for the purpose of driving people to their website so they get money from advertisers. there is no message, no statement, no purpose other than to earn money. and the worst part of it is that other people see it, think it's cool and start doing simmilar things.

It's not a Luddite movement against technology, it's a stupid game of who can do the stupidest thing and put it on video. it's The Dudesons without the bodily harm.

I guess I see no problem in people buying a hot item and selling it for money. No one is forced to fork over the big bucks for this stuff. People can just wait a few months for the suppy to catch up to demand. I don't see it that differently than early adopters getting premium rental rates from HVX and Red cameras. If these guys manage to get money from advertisers, then I think they've succeeded in their purpose.

I think you've missed their purpose, their purpose isn't to smash and do stupid things on video, their purpose is to create a viral campaign to get advertising money for their website. If it's working, they've succeeded. Well, I think you've got what they intended, but I wouldn't say it's without purpose. It would be even stupider if they got no benefit from smashing a PS3 except to shock people.

to quote myself: "these guys on the other hand are smashing expensive hardware for the purpose of driving people to their website so they get money from advertisers. there is no message, no statement, no purpose other than to earn money. and the worst part of it is that other people see it, think it's cool and start doing simmilar things."

My point is that this is a social disease/disorder that is spreading because of the sudden ability for everyone to put their own stupidity out on the web for public consumption. My point is that this subculture is in fact based on degrading humanity, not evolving it. My point is that with all the problems we are facing this type of crap does nothing but make everything worse.

I guess what I'm tring to say is that I've lost faith in humanity and this stuff just makes me more sure that my losing faith in humanity is justified.

There are probably better places than YouTube to make a determination of the state of humanity.

Maybe someone should do Smash an HVX at a boot camp....... then yo uwill see some nerd feathers fly!!!!

I don't know... I would have paid a couple bucks, just to see the look on those people's faces. How sad is it, that you sleep on a sidewalk for days- for a frikken video game? And it isn't like they couldn't wait 6 weeks, and then just walk into the store and buy it, they had to have it first. Reminds me of little Veruka in Willie Wonka, she just had to have that gum...

We went to live studio wrestling and cheered for the bad guys. Apparently, some folks take their wresting very seriously.

I agree with Morten. What's sad is that Youtube may actually encourages stupid/dangerous behavior just to get other people's attention. I read an interview sometime ago about these two teens who posted frequently on youtube. What do they do? They set different parts of their bodies on fire and videotaped it. After one incident they actually ended up in the emergency room with burns all over their arms. When they're interviewed they said that it was "totally worth it" because their videos were huge hits and that they were definitely doing it again, presumably with even more extreme stunts.

Yeah, I'm sorry but that's funny as hell. I love the guy at the end that was intervied and pissed off as could be. I just wonder how people feel in three months looking back at this week in their life, and they are now sick of their new toy and now everyone else has one too. Priorities man, priorities.

Personally, if kids want to light themselves on fire so that people can watch it for free on you tube, let them, all the more power to them, Give them a Darwin Award.

And to everyone saying smash the HVX or Smash a RED, the two don't really compare. I know I know, its a joke, but remember the PS3 is a TOY. It's a freakin toy. NOw I know some people consider their cameras toys as well, but for the rest of us while they do bring joy to our lives, they are also the way we make money. Now if Someone was out smashing hard to find cameras, I might take a little more offense, but it's just a toy.

There is some wisdom after all ;)

Although the majority of the viewing public wouldn't know what an HVX or a RED is so I think it would generate a bit less enthusiasm.
