how to make a person disappear?

I am interested in making a person vanish in a scene and was wondering how do i go about doing it. Basically two people are talking and i want one to vanish in front of your eyes.

Is it possible to do this. What software can i use (After Effects, FXLab etc) to do this effect?

Also do i have to use same major greenscreen stuff to do this. i.e the character to disappear would wear some kind of green suite that could be erased in post.

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

-Kris

Just shoot the same scene with the tripod locked down and shoot it twice. Then fade between the two...

Easy nuff...

There are a lot of different ways to do that, some are more complex than other and some may need a green screen shoot, some may not. If your camera is not moving, the easiest way would be to shoot a clean plate (no actors) and then shoot your scene with the actors. All you need to do is rotoscope the actor you want to vanish and keyframe your transparency settings. A nice touch is to have several garbage mattes for the actor and offset the dissolve for each of them, to give the illusion that different parts of the body are vanishing at different rates. You can also add a slight blur or glow as he/she disappears. If the camera moves, then it would involve tracking, you probably don't want to go there unless you know an experience compositing artist. A green screen is not really necessary.

well,
look at the clip below. if this is what u wanted, u have to shoot the same scene 2 times with and without the actor with the camera locked down. i suggest u keep it running continuosly or use a remote to start stop. once locked down dont even go near the camera. i used vegas6. used 2 video tracks and used the compositeLevel envelope on the top track.

hope that helps

That is dependent on the kind of movement. A simple pan or even a dolly move can be done with the most simple of setups.

This is cloning rather than dissappearing, but that's just academic.

matt,
wow...that was amazing and is exactly what i was looking for. how did u do that ... did u move the dolly 3 times with the guy at a different place everytime
how did u match the dolly speed ? or did u follow a new technique altogether ?

thanks
krishna.

i saw this clip from another site once a while back. I believe the maker actually put his camera on top a motoarized lego train set. the train's speed was consistent and since it was on tracks, we was able to flim multiple passes and merge them. hope that helps. it still looks so cool everytime I see it!
