This is me first post so let me start by saying hello to everyone and I will try to keep my post short. Ok this my dilemma I could get a MAC G4 1.14 15” for a good price (500-700US) but I don’t know if this MAC is capable of capturing and edit HD footage. Are do you think a Macbook (not the pro) would serve me better?

the new macbook as of today is quite impressive - but just remember the video card is basically using shared memory and therefore it would be hard to say whether you would be having issues with "lag"
My gut says the macbook would be fine but are you comfortable on 13inches to edit or is this just for capture.

Maybe you could let us know what it is you actually want this machine to run?

Ram thanks for answering. Have you used this MAC for HD editing before? If so did you use external monitor.

I edit on a 17 inch Powerbook G4 1.67 but I don't do HD yet, all SD from my DVX100A for now. I'm pondering about purcasing a macpro, I'm just worried about the fact that all my FCP Plugin's are not Univeral Bnaries.

I upgraded to a macbook pro and was not able to use my magic bullet filters anymore. One thing you can do is do your editing on the macpro and then connect your media and edit to your powerbook and apply the plugins there. The only thing is you are only seeing a increase in performance with fcp itself and not rendering any plugins.

On the note of the macbook vs powerbook. Go with the macbook it is way faster than the G4 and will handle HD better. I have not used it personally but I do have a macbook pro and I can say I have no issues with fcp. I also have it connected to a 30" apple display. One thing I would suggest with the macbook is to get a external display.

Thanks for your suggestion everyone. The main thing I would like to do is buy a MAC and DVX 100B to do some SD editing and then later get the HVX200 for the HD stuff. So no one used MACbook for HD yet? Wano540 what type off monitor would suggest for some CC and editing using FinalcutPRO.

How much later? As with all computer stuff, a year from now you'll be able to get something that's faster and cheaper. Generally it's best to buy what suits your current needs, and upgrade when your needs change. (If you're thinking of moving to the HVX soon, then it's a different story, of course.)

I would suggest a nice size lcd, 20" at least and a broadcast monitor to really judge the color of your video.

JVC has a nice 15" broadcast monitor for around $500. Here is a link http://www.clubmac.com/clubmac/shop...H+RESOLUTION+COLOR+MONITOR~mfg~TMH-150CGU.asp .

I use a mackbook (non pro) for HDV editing with an external 24" 1900 x 1200 Dell monitor and it works great.

Just remember that some effects will take longer to render on HDV.

i have a last gen 15" powerbook, and edit dvx footage with final cut pro. i would definitely recommend getting the newest machine that your budget will allow. be prepared for whatever you buy to be out of date the second you get it home though. :( electronics will do that to you, eh? as long as you can shoot and edit video! good luck with the decision, and have fun!
