Round 10 - DVXUser Photography Challenge

Ok, so since the contest site is going down soon for maintenance, I'll post it here.

Several people expressed and interest in knowing how I created the final image, so here is a brief explanation:

1. Shot with Canon 30D and 17-85mm at 17mm f.4
2. Color: All color work was done in the RAW adjustments
3. Attempt Photomerge. It failed miserably.
4. Correct optical distortion (available somewhere in the filter menu).
5. Put two adjacent source images on large canvass. Adjust opacity of one layer so you can see through to the other, and use "free transform" to line them up.
6. Create a layer mask on the top layer.
7. Use a brush with about a hardness of "7" to paint on the mask to blend the two images.
8. Repeat 5-7 for all source images.
9. Crop to taste
10. Dodge and burn to bring out details (didn't actually do any burning on this one).
11. Somewhere in there throw in some clone stamping to totally construct the upper right corner.

The full res TIF file is 300-400MB. 8x18" at 300dpi.

Thanks so much for all the feedback on that, as well as on my other images.

:( oh man... my best work yet, and still failing top 5... good job everyone else!

For anyone wondering -- the bird is my pet lovebird. She's about 3 years old and likes to play outside now and then. I spent two afternoons trying to get some good pictures of her since the fall leaves matched her feather coloring so well.

Funny thing was that she always does the usual chirp/call, indoors or out. Nothing around here vaguely resembles anything in the parrot family, but this time another bird answered the call, and a few seconds later another lovebird landed about 20 feet above us. It never came close enough for a decent picture. I guess it was a pet that someone let go.

Yeah Owen, I loved that pic... amazing colors! That's cool it's your pet! Aren't birds insanely loud as pets though?

Yeah -- rather loud. Okay, incredibly loud. At least this one is... especially if there's music on. And I've just adopted a cat that I'm training for a movie to be shot next year... so we'll see how well they get along!

For some reason I felt like the desert sunset was yours -- maybe you've shot somewhere similar for footage posted before... or maybe I'm psychic!

haha... how do you stand the loudness???

hehe. Actually I did shoot one sunset, but it was with my camera phone! Not nearly the same effect, lol! I took that shot on a drive out to Vegas. The sunset looked so freakin' cool in my rearview mirror, I pulled over to the side of the road, and took the shot! My fave. thing about it, is the power lines in the BG...

both of my images were critisized as not fitting the theme, so thats the part i'll work hardest on next time. I really enjoyed participating though i felt the critiques were very good and honest but in a constructive way. This community shows a lot of class.

i'm already working on stuff for the next contest, lookin' forward to seeing the results.

thanks for hosting this and congrats to the winners, you deserve it.

thanks for the compliment. I really enjoy the 2nd one, the sunset. I think that panoramic look works really well in that case. Nice colour too.

i have it as a B2 sized print in my apartment :D

(this was at a little gallery showing i had in Osaka recently)

I just liked the texture of it. I thought it was beauty. Thanks to everyone who commented on it. And you're right, it would have been better without the radiator, but I didn't have the time to take it out so I was hoping it would remind someone of their grandparent's house or something and I'd get the "fond memory" vote. :)

Looking forward to Round 11!

That was a pain in the ass...

OK, we broke everything down to a hundreth of a decimal point, so where you see two entries at 10, they both had an overall rating of 6.94; hence why you see multiple images at a certain level.

If you have any questions regarding votes, tabulations, or anything along those lines please let me know

EDIT:
Scores are updated and entered now as well.

Thanks for sharing the results.

I just wish I had done a little better. :(

Chris

p.s. How do we find out our original image and post processing score?
