Our Feature in DLP THeaters DEC 8th..check trailer here..

I previously used Digital Fusion, now out source to compositor I know who uses DF. I am new to Prem Pro, not to editing. I am wonder what PP2 tool(s) you would use to reduce the noise factor of HVX/Varicam. When you say color timing, are you using, say, the 3-way CC to remove noise? I will have a closer look at the FX tools PP2 offers, tomorrow.

You guys did a really good job, as frustrating as PP2 was for you.

I don't know if it's the combo of prem pro 2 and cineform or what. but tit looks like prem does not like long form project at al, pukes and spits all the time...someone needs to tell adobe ASAP about prem using 1.7GB of ram with a 2 hour project file!!

obin, I have read on the CineForm Unplugged blog that you had this memory problem. I also have read in the past, another user mentioning they had to do a long form project in sections because of some memory issues. I am not sure where the problem is, if PP2 or CineForm. I have had PP2 freeze for periods of time, then release, I guess that is the memory issue.

I am waiting for a Quad cpu to release and will make a tower system to place my OEM Xena card (purchased with PHD). Can you tell me, does the Xena card run well? Drivers and HD-SDI and Component HD I/O fine, for monitoring and CC mostly?

Thanks hairy, I will play with Curves in PP2 and see how it goes for reducing noise.

obin, Quad cpu about to be released, won't be too long before I start using the Xena beast. Thanks for feedback obin and hairy, thats about it.

obin / hairy,

I had a play with the PP2 RGB Curves and Luma Curves (essentially RGB Master).

As previously mentioned, I am finding some darker setups with the HVX have some noise, and looking closer, it appears some footage is actually suffering from compression blockiness in parts.

I can not really see how Curves tool helps a lot with removing noise, and definitely not compression blockiness. The only benefit I could see was crushing the blacks with the curves tools, applying 2 points near the bottom left corner of the tool. PP2's Curves tool is lacking spline control, adjustment is rather frustrating and I could not figure out how to delete additional points added that required subsequent removal. Need a Digital Fusion PP2 plug-in, I wish. :D

I actually found the 3-way CC more useful, as I could isolate tweaking the noise in the blacks only, by adjusting the shadows, not affecting the mids and highlights (as much), whereas the curves had a more global effect, wiping out some mids and highlights detail.

It was good to finally force myself to use some of PP2's effects. If you are into curves, I can see your frustration with the PP2 tool. Bring on CineForm PHD RT Curves any day, with spline controls on either side of each point added (DF rules).

Any feedback and further explanation on how you did your great CC work on WMCD would be much appreciated, especially explaining how you made the background of the back stage of the dance floor, a very dark area of the set, to be so clean and noise free?

Thanks.

yep, you have found out that dvcprohd has LOTS of compression!! and that is how it goes. I can't wait to get my RED camera

hi Obin, you was an Andromeda beta tester... why are you selling your DVX+Andro and why do you've used Varicam rather than modified DVX?
I'm waiting for PAL Andromeda and i'm planning my purchases looking at this one but i don't know if it is really a good solution

I sold the unit because I am using the hvx, it's not the same quality image..but its good enough for me, and has multi framerates...

Varicam stinks..it is what it is...a 2/3rd inch ccd camera, with tons of compression on it...we have had some good luck color timing the "video" look out of the footage..I will post some when our deadlines for getting trailers and the film out are over....arrgg the render times I am dealing with!

Variable frame rate is the only specs that let me think that HVX is superior than DVX (by now i'm happy with uprezzed DVX... for 6000$ ;P )
the problems for me are compression artifacts and the color space so all the cameras that outputs compressed footage "are the same"...
but i'm worry because Andromeda isn't really portable. Do you think that the quality and the price are good enough to bypass the difficult to carry out the Andromeda system?

"WHITE MEN CAN'T DANCE" MAKES WILMINGTON FILM HISTORY!
PREMIERES THEATRICALLY DECEMBER 8, 2006 IN SIX STATES

"White Men Can't Dance" is making Wilmington, NC film history as the first independent film to be fully financed, written & produced, cast & crewed, shot on HD & edited in Wilmington, to secure theatrical distribution in six states. The World Premiere will be at Carmike Cinemas, 111 Cinema Drive, on Friday, December 8, complete with a Red Carpet’ arrival of the Cast, Crew, Investors, and MEDIA at 6:30 pm and the Public Screening at 7 pm. Frank Capra, Jr. and other dignitaries will attend.

Premiering in digital theatres in NC, SC, AL, TN, TX, and GA, with strong box-office attendance opening week, "White Men Can't Dance" will open theatrically nationwide. Advance tickets go on sale November 28 at Carmike, as a portion of the profits will go the Children's Miracle Network to help terminally ill children.

Written, directed, and starring Peter S. Vinal, and produced by film veteran, Francine DeCoursey, "White Men Can't Dance" is a heart-warming family film, rated PG, about a former break-dancer who has just lost his Dad, his job, and now his precious six-year-old daughter is seriously ill and needs an expensive operation. Determined to raise the money to save his daughter's life, he calls on his former dance trainers to help him get in shape for an "old-school meets new school" break-dance competition with a large cash prize. The finale is a dynamic Break-dance’ competition featuring some of the best B-boys’ from NY, California, and Puerto Rico, incorporating innovative camera techniques to make the dancing look 3-dimensional.

In his directorial debut, Peter Vinal (a REMAX Real Estate broker, filmmaker, former break-dancer and musician) pays homage to some of his heroes: His inventor father and artist mother, Jerry Lewis’ comic antics, and Walt Disney. "White Men Can't Dance" features many talents from Wilmington's impressive film community in both cast and crew. Peter Vinal, Elizabeth Roberts, Tyhm Kennedy, Dick Olsen, Marc Whitehead, Maxwell Paige, Stacia Crawford, and introducing young Kaitlyn Cox as "Beanie"; Sarah Mather, Wilmington's own "American Idol" finalist, also performs.

DV3 Productions provided the impressive technical team with Larry Olson as Tech Dir., Obin Olson as Director Of Photography and Editor, Amariah Olson as Camera Operator and Animator; Joyce Marling as Costume Designer and Set Decorator, Joan Shay & Don King in Hair & Make-up, and Julia Tasker as Script Supervisor. As Producer, DeCoursey also served as Prod. Mgr, Casting Director, Locations Mgr, Accountant, Catering/ Craft Service, etc.

"We built a strong family of cast & crew, all doing many jobs, to bring the project in on time and on budget!" said DeCoursey. "That's the challenge and the magic of low-budget independent film. We also want to encourage the production of more wholesome, family films. There’s too much violence and negativity in the world. We need more films with hope and heart."

Executive Producers Peter Vinal and Jon Vincent secured all the funding locally for this family film from church friends and fellow realtors.

"This is for all of us! If we succeed, hopefully we encourage more investors to fund independent films in NC, allowing for the profits to return to the state. Though we surely want to continue to attract big-budget Hollywood productions to film in NC, we also want to see our regional film industry evolve into a more indigenous, independent filmmaking center," said Vinal. "We have everything we need to succeed. We just need to expand funding and distribution support! North Carolina can lead the way!"
