ND filter on dvx or glass ND filters

Why do people buy ND filters when there is one on the DVX. Is the one on the DVX digital and reduce the resolution? Or what?

sometimes shooting in bright sunblight you might want to shoot at 2.8 .. the in camera ND might not be enough to knock the light down so one would add more ND's ...

The down side to the internal ND filters in the DVX is the large steps that they have. There are many intermediate amounts of ND that can be required to get the correct exposure under differing conditions. Most high end cameras offer 4 or more internal ND filters, but even then, that may not give you the ideal value.

Why? In super bright scenes the ND64 is not enough to open the apature all the way if you want to achieve shallow DOF with the stock leica and no 35mm adaptor.

didn't someone do a A,B test on internal V.S. glass ND's and come to the conclusion that internal ND's degrade the image a little. I am sure i read this, maybe on the Redrock forum???

the internal filters are calibrate to the color profile of the chip - so you will be getting true ND. However, you can get a slight color cast with external filters that intensifies with more ND depending on quality of material - it is very hard to create true Neutral material.

With my hvx - a .9 tiffen ND filter imparts a very strong pink cast in the brights of the image - there was a long thread awhile back in the section awhile back all about this
