Stupid frakin' Ford Cars

I drive a Chevy. Just turned over 100,000 miles (I put on 80,000) on it and it's still going strong. Never had a tuneup, just regular service...what an incredible car.

What's an American car? I don't think where a car is made matters as much as where it is designed, and who the suppliers are. Both designers and producers (i.e., the actual manufacturing plants) of North American cars are notorious for cutting corners on materials and pushing their cost savings down to suppliers, which only exacerbates the problem.

Buy a VW.

I really don't like cars much....Well I respect the design and qiute often fall head over heels for the look but I would give up having to drive, insure, fuel and maintain my car in a heartbeat for a startrek transporter. Imagine leaving your home 15 minutes before your shift starts and ariving 14 minutes early anywhere in the world...:)

Forget transporters... I want the Defiant!

I'll quote Andrew Phillips who said it best: "You've got lithium-ion batteries in all sorts of things -- cell phones, iPods, and other household goods. But generally none of those run into each other at 100 kilometers per hour like cars do."

Of course, this is true, I agree, but then its not any more dangerous than having a fuel of tank of petroleoum "Running into each other at 100 kilometers", this arugment of safety concern is really a mute point, if you are worried about Lith -Ion safety then you should logically be JUST as concerned when driving in an ordinary petrol car.

I'm gonna assume that you drive into work like many millions of people around the world and they where sitting on-top of fuel tank! But not many people stopped and said "no" I'm not gonna drive around in a car where I have to sit ontop of a tank filled with highly flameable chemicals! :)

Anyways- from an engineering perspective a EV makes complete logical sense (when compared to an ICE). Also EV's predate any ICE, shame the battery technology is holdig it back. There is no reason why EVs can not replace ICE, no reason at all:

(1) Range (not a problem, with the right batteries 400 Miles to the charge has been demonstrated)
(2) Speed, example: T Zero 0-60 in 3.6 seconds [1]
(3) Charging has been demonstrated to around 10 minutes. [2]

Anyway man I know you wanna hold onto you ICE, thats fine I repect that. But as an engineer, I cringe everytime I drive my car, thinking this is the stupidest thing ever.....

Like I said before the technology is here (in fact its been here a long time ago), until someone mass produces Lit-Ion batteries and brings the cost down, we will have to burn oil.

First of all; sorry Charli - we completely hijacked your thread! :)

Anhar; it's a good discussion, and one that many people have had in last few decades. Certainly agree with the ICE-age (:)) being something that needs to be phased out. I am no fan of the ICE car...AT ALL - not sure where you got that idea. The current Li-Ion technology needs updating to make them safer, that's all. Sure it works better and is better than NiMH or <cough> lead-acid, but the combustability of the currect Li-Ion technology will be something that car makers WILL have to address. My guess is that Li-Ion powered cars using current technology won't be manufactured for very long, maybe a decade or so? The new technology exists to make them much safer, and the public will DEMAND safer/better battery technology once the EV take over (the sooner the better).
All it will take is a horrific accident and we have the whole Hindenburg scenario over again - a shame of course, as the concept of both the airship and the EV is VERY sound....just need to make sure they use safe[er] technology (which is/was available in both cases of course!)

Well, you know what I mean... :)

Vidled - hey, it's all good.

Anhar - duuuuude! Long time I haven't seen your post. Maybe I'm just not
in the same circle on these boards as you are. Hope you are doing well.

Come to the light:

I own 3 cars... 2003 Mustang GT, 87 Mustang GT, and a 67 Mustang - 289 w/ 4 speed toploader tranny... never have any problems... I've owned nothing but Mustangs since 1990...

hey Vidled, well I'm glad to hear that your not anti-EV I guess I must have mistaken your previous post , But I now see where you are comming from ! yea I agree 100% that safety is paramount, its the reason we engineers always have a Four fold Safety margin Plus when things fail we design that they Fail "Safely". But I'm sure with enough investment and will it can be done (thats something I believe strongly) shame the wider public is slightly mis-educated about the EV's in general, you know they get bad press. Average Joes starts thinking Golf Kart when someone mentions EV, I guess its a sad stereotype that needs to be broken.

@ Charli

Oops, Sorry Charli for kinda Jacking your thread, not intended, Its just EV is on of my trigger point, I kinda Jump when talking about it and usually bore the hell out of everyone! :) . Hmm I guess I'n not posting as much these days more reading posts and doing a ton of other stuff. Yea I'm well, hope you are doing good too, Have you changed your Avatar only I remember it differently.

Hey ChuckS, you ever been tempted to use your car as a prop in any of your indi films? cuz I can envision 101 films for that car hehe !
