Round 10 - DVXUser Photography Challenge

As far as the theme of beauty is concerned, I think that absolutely anything can be seen as beautiful- by the right person in the right context.

I came across some images or subjects that I didn't find beautiful at all, and in those instances I judged them based on how well the photographer expressed why THEY think it's beautiful. If I can see their perspective, or even more beauty in it than I normally would- I gave them a good score.

Beautiful pictures aren't all flowers and sunsets (not taking away from the flower or sunset submissions, some of them were breathtaking.) Some of them got me to sit there and really think about why someone may find it beautiful. Thinking analytically about the image- of course some of them were stunning right when I opened them.

I agree that almost anything can be beautiful, from the right perspective. There was one image in particular that I felt twisted the theme in a particularly compelling way, and I gave that one very high marks. But there were others where I felt they were just lazily shoehorned in: "yeah, I guess that's beauty..."

But like Jeremy said, to each his own. I think the voting will even everything out in the end. Anyway, I don't really care about the voting that much, I was just confused by a couple things. I'm just glad I finally found time to do one of these things. Is this really #10? Man.

Well round 11 will be more specific with the title and theme (announcing tomorrow) but.... no massive prizes so we'll see how many people return for next weeks.

Which is a good point that I forgot to make- some of them simply didn't work. I found I was sometimes trying to stretch myself too much.

I hope we get even MORE entries for Round 11! I was here for Round 1, and came back for Round 10, but it all came down to timing for me and finding time to shoot the pictures I really wanted to shoot.

There will ALWAYS be a prize in this competition, and that is the improvement of your own skills and the chance for feedback from your peers. Those things can be hard to come by, and should be a welcome prize for everyone!

ok i registered and i was waiting for an email so i can check out the pic,s but no email yet it has been 2 hours. i cant login help!

all voted! really good stuff.

I was confused by two things, though, which would be nice to see addressed for next time:

1) what to do with images that had NO manipulation between the original and final. For these I decided to simply not vote on the two "processed" criteria, but I'm not sure if this was the right thing to do.

2) I noticed there were some really nice images that really didn't seem to fit the theme at all. I think it'd be good to have a rating for how appropriate to the theme the image was. As it was I simply rated these images 2-3 points lower than I otherwise would have, but it made evaluating the image more difficult.

Anyway, lots of good competition!

edit: answered my own question... voting ends Nov 10.
My personal opinion and the way I voted:

1 - If the original image was good enough that it didn't need much (any) manipulation, then I rated that category high if the photographer chose NOT to mess with it. Although, most images can use SOMETHING.

2 - I rated the 1st 3 categories based on the quality of the image, but I docked points in the "overall submission" if it was off topic.

Again, that's just how I did it...

Well, I've spent some time with the photos and I've competed the scoring. Over the next few days, I'll submit some critiques.

its a nice one, those colours just jump right out. There are a lot of really nice photos in there, i especially like seeing how some of them came together. I can't wait to read about the process involved. I hope theres an active discussion after votings done.

I'll be interested to see what everyone DIDN'T post as well -- because I'll bet some tough decisions were made regarding what to submit and what had to be left out!

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain... but, we have deleted a user and their votes because of irregularities already. Just to remind everyone, you MUST use your DVXUser name when registering for the site.

I finished voting on them all. The system was very easy to use. I just wish there was a way to tweak your votes before the deadline.

Chris

p.s. I was surprised to see the comments on many of the photos. I didn't think they would show up until after the voting was over.

Yeah -- same here. After sleeping on it I found myself wanting to go back and tweak some votes! Maybe it's a good thing. I might obsess over it all week!

I can't log in and see them. I have had my user name on the forum changed, and it is defaulting to my old login name. I CAN still get into Jeremy's site, but the new one is a no go. I treid registering, but have not recieved anything in my email. I'll keep waiting and try again in a few.

I just finished commenting on them all. I am a photographer newbie, so please take my comments with a grain of salt. I am definitely still learning from all of you.

Chris
