MPIC DVX Lens to GG distance...

Inexistence

What size does the MPIC use for framing? 36x24mm? 24x18mm? If the MPIC is
using a beattie screen at 36x24mm, how is it possible for the DVX to focus on that
size without an achromat? I'm confused? Anyone have any insights? Dan, please
explain?

Hi inexistence,

on the mpic image is this only a UV-Protector?
And what is this ring with TIFFEN on it is this the achromat?

Maybe his using achromatic triplet with some booster lens. I made quick-test with my little cam putting 2 achromatic triplets one behind another
||) (|| with the konvex side facing each other and got a very very short adapter. Or he is using a much bigger gg and then he is able to use the macro function of the camcorder so no achromat is needed.

I looked on Dans site but the galleries wont open correctly. I got errors on opening his gallery sites. http://www.dandiaconu.com/newweb/index.htm

Hi inexistence,

here i made a concept design but i didnt tested it yet because i dont have such a big camcorder like DVX,HVX or Z1.

The gg-screen should be little bigger than the camcorder lens. Then you need to measure the minimal macro distance of your camcorder and put the screen in front of it. You get a very compact 35mm adapter wihout using a Achromat.
Like i said i didnt tested it its only a concept idea.

I believe the Tiffen is just an empty UV filter ring used to space the MPIC from
the DVX to achieve proper focus.

I remember seeing seeing a few photos a few months back of the MPIC but, I
never saved or studied them so I'm not sure if Dan is using any other kind
of magnification after the Beattie screen.

Dan has posted several times about the importance of using high quality achromats, so it's been implied that one is used in his design. Either that or he has used one at some point along the way. Like I said, this is just speculation. I'm sure he'll wander in here someday and see this and maybe explain.

Like Daniel said, if you get a large enough GG you can eliminate the achromat altogether. You generally need a condenser though in order to avoid a hotspot on the GG.

Thanks Dan! One last question though, what size are you framing at?
36x24 or 24x18?

Wow! Dan, you sir, are awesome! That is one hell of a design!
You've inspired me to do a Leica version adapter!

Thank you sir, good to know I inspired you....
The frame is 24/36mm and a Leica/MPIC I finished earlier this year is here:

http://www.care2.com/c2c/photos/view/741898547/Noctilux_MPIC__project/

The mount was a female dog to work with (got it of ebay) and I had to machine new parts to make it work (did not lock in palce the lens) see the above pictures. As for the rest of the device, was the slimmest I ever made (28mm thick).
Good luck with yours.

Hi!

maybe a little "off-topic", but Dan ... while I browse thrue your (interesting ) pics, I noticed Pentacon Six non-metered prism waiting for tests at your desk..

I was thinking also, of buying one of those for tests; is this prism proven like a good choice for fliping image in 35mm adapter??

Thanks for help,

david

p.s. MPIC and other your stuff is WOW !!!!

The first image converter I made had indeed a prism to flip the image:
http://www.care2.com/c2c/photos/view/741898547/758330850/692820481.html
It worked fine with a GS200 I used back then, but the prism was too small for the larger lenses of the new cameras that followed (FX1, Z1, etc) and too small also for DVX and HVX. Not worth the trouble (imo) for the extra time and expense to add and align the optical path of the prism (not to mention the extra weight and cost for the end user), but definitely an option for the passionate and enthusiast DIY (owning a smaller camcorder). I can only guess something like this:
http://www.geeksquare.info/media/sony hd-thumb.jpg
would work with the above mentioned prism, but don't take my word for it, I did not test it. Is just the size of the lens on this camcorder that makes me think it would work. Take the prism into a retail store and zoom the camcorder through it.
If you can get a clear 24/36mm, it works. Good luck.

Thanks Dan!

You gave me some valuable infomations!

I saw pic of your "early" adapter before, but I didn't noticed that was made for gs200 and didn't know that uses prism..

I was more anxious about prism/mirror light loss than size and weight of it..

I like the way how are those systems mounted into Director's viewfinders from ARRI and Panavision; but true only works for smaller camcorders..

I thought it would be better using MF prism ( it is way bigger ) ,and add ( if possible ) +4 AC before prism and +6 after prism..

I don't know if that is physically OK, just an idea..

But after reading so much about light-loss of prisms ( I supposed Hasselblad non-metered prism should work best ).. it would be more clever to use the prism with geometry same as in Movietube..because you don't need mirror in that case and also you have only three reflections in that prism ( in compare with five in pentaprism ).. so: it should have less light loss..

About SONY HDR-HC3 .. Nice camcorder, nice price! I would mind using DOF adapter with that camcorder.. but without microphone input and manual controls .. I don't know how much usable it is..

:dankk2: again! I appreciate your work!

@Dan:
are there any news on the release of the Felix?
Is there a thread to follow?
Last thing I read was you teamed up with someone and would soon sell the Felix for less than 1500$...

I posted this link in the sticker a while ago:
http://www.intenscreen.com/pdf/How_Does_It_Work.pdf
Test it. The orientation of the screen is not only subject to lens and screen, but also the camera used and distance camcorder to screen as well and achromat used (or no). Test it. I used to mount the Fresnel side towards the SLR lens.

@Spartacus: the thread to follow was (back then) this one:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=62742&page=4

I left three weeks ago when I left Canada the latest MPIC/Felix device:
http://www.care2.com/c2c/photos/view/741898547/FELIX/IMG01612.jpg.html with Mr. Dearinger to have it manufactured. Last time I heard from him was he was still testing it.
Please ask on the above thread for the future/release of this device.

Thank you Dan but it's my fault for not being more camera specific:)

Let me rephrase... what beattie orientation have you used specifically
for the DVX100/A/B versions that have yielded the best results?

My guess is the orientation as descibed by the "How does it work.pdf"

B should give you better results (unless your tests prove the opposite) Keep in mind different SLR lenses will have different results (I am talking specifically about wide angle lenses, wider than 35mm)

That looks very sexy Dan!
