Round 10 - DVXUser Photography Challenge

what a great idea. like snod, i've been in the dark about this. i've always thought that working in still photography would be a great way to improve one's cinematography skills. i too will try to get something done.

Regarding the scoring, the overall is not a weighted average but more of a seperate vote. We are giving people the opportunity to vote on the original image as well as the post production technique and finally the final image. The vote on the final image can be influenced by what people see that you started with which may help or hurt, but ultimately it will prove to be a learning curve and learning experience for others.

Sorry, I'm still confused.

For example, suppose someone submits a beautiful raw image, does very little post production work and the first three scores look like this:

Original: 7
Post Production: 4
Final Image: 8

Would you expect the overall submission score to be around a 6?

I guess I'm just not sure how post production score factors into or doesn't factor into Overall Submission score.

It comes down to this, what is the difference between the Final Image score and the Overall Submission score? If Overall Submission is a combination of how much you have improved your picture through the process, then it sounds like we would be better off starting with an image that will benefit dramatically from post-production work.

Chris

p.s. I'm fine with whatever the answer is, I just want to choose my entry accordingly.

I just had an idea!
If I really need a tablet I can just take a self portrait and win the last prize :D

I'm a little confused, too... but I kind of figured it'd all balance out anyway. For example... if the image REALLY needed a lot of work, then your original image might score a 4 and your post production might be a 7... it'd still average out to the same overall score (assuming the final images were both 8's).

Also, I think (meaning my opinion only) that the post processing score could be really high if you only slightly tweak your image. If a slight adjustment is all it needed to make it "perfect" and that's all you did, then I'll score it high. If someone spends 3 days photoshopping an image and it just doesn't make any sense or looks obviously PS'd, then they'll score low. It's not all about showing what you can do, but also knowing what it needs and when to stop. Again, this is just how I'll be looking at it.

Pure and simple:

Voting categories:

Original Image 0-10
Final Image 0-10
Post Processing 0-10
Overal Image 0-10

Original Image means the basic image submitted
Final Image means the final image submitted
Post Processing means the technique applied to the image
Overal Image means after seeing the original and final side by side, what is your opinion on the final image

The voting is based off the OVERAL IMAGE category but the other categories will also be considered for prizes TBA.

Pure and simple...

I don't want people to think that the post production is going to determine how an image scores overall but there are certain images where post production technique makes an image pop.

Personally speaking, as my schedule is booked with more weddings as well as studio sessions I have continued to notice that the little changes I do on each image: levels, curves, saturation, contrast plus the more indepth tools such as masks, selective color, and channel mixer yield various results and more professional / polished images.

It has helped me increase my business, but as far as this being a contest there is an overall category that will hopefully be that all encompassing how do all these factors influence you voting process.

Deadline is this weekend and we came up with a solution that works around the excel spreadsheet, so this should be a fun experience for all :)

I thought you of all people would appreciate that, Barry!

Actually Steve Arn has been the man behind this new system that will carry all the photography challenges from now on. He has come up with a great voting system and one that is going to work perfectly for this round. It looks amazing and it works (which is most important).

So, just so I'm clear... BOTH images should be at full resolution? Or just the actual camera original. I guess this will all be clear in the upload instructions... I'm just worried I'll get too busy and forget to do it!
