Just got the HVX. I will be doing alot of run/gun, quick setups and B-roll. How well does the LCD produce color for the field? Do I need a small HD monitor for assist with this?

Thanks!

No, you just need to have DVRack 2.0 (I do)
Have 10 expectacular HD tools (including Disk Recording ) by the price of a cheap monitor

LCD has elevated blacks, and viewing angle variances.

But software based scopes, if accurate, are a great thing to have - just don't clip!

Be careful what you wish for.

We use DV Rack in our professinal productions since a couple of years.
Now we use it in it's HD incarnation in our HVX cinema productions, no complains, every shot is as it should be thanks to DVRack 2.0, we have blow up to 35 mm 2 of this short features... OK!!!

If color is absolutley critical in camera, then you should get an onboard HD monitor. But if you can deal with "REALLY GOOD" results with the built in, and do some minor CC is post, then save the $$..

I agree with Justin on this 100%. The thing is this whole week I have been filming most of the time knee to waste deep in a river and hiking over river beds for hours as we shoot our fly fishing episode. Unfortunately dragging a monitor around or even attaching a marshall as I am stumling around in hip waders just doesn't work.

So I just pay close attention to my distance, my exposure and make sure I am white /warm balanced properly, keep my filters clean and happy, my matteblox snug and roll with it.
90% of the time this is all it takes, every now and then I might hit a snag but for those times its content relevant and usually very very minor cc is needed.

Still though dv rack is a tremendous product and you are getting some good input here.

DVrack? He said run and gun and b-roll. I'm sure an onboard monitor would suite him better.
