Slow Motion at 29.97

Hey all. I am currently editing in 29.97 anarmophic based on footage I imported from a DVD Movie. (video for class)

It seems that every time I attempt to slow clips down, once they reach about 50-60%, the motion seems to become very choppy. I have tried playing with frame blending but it does not seem to help much (although it seems better with it on)

Does anyone have advice on getting smoother looking slow motion from clips you didn't shoot. (IE: Hollywood movie) or just in general?

Appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Just because of what I've seen recently from some other posts I have to ask, this so called 'choppy' motion is choppy where exactly, on your computer screen or an actual external monitor?

Honestly when doing slow motion of something you didn't shoot, and you didn't shoot at a varied frame rate, then I think you do have your limitations. At this point you're asking the program to run over the footage, use an algorithm, and create fake frames. Now NLEs and such are pretty good at this, but they can only do so much at the end of the day.

However, I've never been a huge fan of FCP and speed changes though. Its one place I've felt its lacked behind other NLEs for a long time and don't think its fully addressed that yet. So you might want to consider taking the footage out to another application to do the speed change then bringing it back into FCP. I'd suggest you try After Effects or Shake.

cheers.

try using TWIXTOR. It comes with After Effects 7, or you can download a trial version as well for FCP. It basically morphs and interpolates footage. Sometimes it looks more of a morph then slo-mo but try it out.
