Import footage from DVD

Hey guys,

So I am working on a project settings:
DV Pal 48 kHZ Anamorphic
I have to import some footage from a DVD so I used the programm handbrake for it. I made a MPEG 4 file and tried to put it in the timeline. The footage is there but I have to render the whole thing and that takes 4 hours. Am I doing something wrong here. I made it 25 fps so it matches the project, or did I have to leave it on same as footage. I tried to put it in as a H.264 Video as well, but got the same problem here? Anyone knows what to do or do I have to bite the bullet and wait 4 hours (on macbook pro) and probably have to render it everytime I change something in it... Any help would be great?

Thanks in advance
Cheers Niels

Compressor setting. Whatever compressor setting you have for you sequence settings must be the same compressor (or codec if you wish) for the footage you put on to it. Anytime you cut in footage that uses a different compressor/codec then you will be required to render it yes. I don't know "Handbrake" at all so can't comment as to whether or not there is a DV Pal option in there or not.

If you can get access to one, I personally think a better way is to use a stand alone DVD recorder unit that has DV In and DV Out. With the DV Out from the unit you can use FCP to capture the footage (and set your capture settings to be the same as your sequence settings). Then you know the footage will cut in smoothly.

The other option is, if you have it all ripped to a .mov of some kind with Handbrake is to put that onto a timeline, render it out (or use a timeline that won't require it to be rendered) and master it out to a mini-DV tape or such. Then log/load from the mini-DV tape and voila you can use all your DV Pal capture settings. You might run into a small quality loss going this way, but I don't imagine it would be that big of one, not as big of one as using ripped DVD footage in the first place.

Good luck.

cheers.

hhm I can't seem to find out how this MPEG streaming works. I downloaded the program and dragged the footage in the window. It plays it, but how do I get it in my timeline then?

i tried opening a dvd of a cable access high school soccer game in streamclip. each of the 4 vob files will open in the program, but as only 30 or 40 second clips. i assume this means that the dvd is "scrambled" or "encoded" or something, and the 30 or 40 seconds that shows up for each part of the stream is the only unscrambled segment. can this type of thing be decoded or unscrambled? If so, does anyone know of the right program for this?

and niels, if i read your question right, after you bring in the clips you just need to go to file>export to___ (the filetype of your choice), and then import the converted files to your NLE.

everybodyclap,

Go into your preferences and turn on "Fix Streams with Data Breaks." What you described seems somewhat similar to what I experienced with it yesterday when I was testing it out. I turned on that setting and things seemed to be happier. Good luck.

cheers.

varicamlife, thanks for the advice, but unfortunately i tried turning that option on and it didnt help. the footage still comes in as tiny clips (under a minute, when the actual files, when played on the dvd player, are closer to 15-20 minutes each.

any other solutions?

No, you can't import into any NLE directly from a DVD, that I'm aware of. I use Cinematize 2 to rip stuff from DVDs. Very flexable, lots of useful features, gives me pretty nice image quality.

will it take a .vob file and import it uncompressed to an mpeg for editing in fcp?

No, it doesn't make MPEG files. You do NOT want to edit with MPEG files. MPEG sucks as an edit medium. You make them what you want, in my case, NTSC-DV. Just drop the whole MPEG file format for editing idea, it just doesn't work out very well.

It all worked fine with exporting the dvd material to a dv-stream with quicktime, but with another project I have now I can't seem to get the audio with it. I export the material to an dv-tream 48KHZ, but somehow the footage looks fine but no audio! What am I doing wrong here? Thank you in advance.

Niels, i never had problems with audio missing. Why are you going to DV-Stream? Maybe try a different format like *.mov with DV codec.

I use Cinematize 2 to make QT NTSC-DV clips in one step from a DVD, video, audio, no problems at all. One step, no hassles, ready to edit in FCP like anything else. Visual quality is maintained wonderfully. Sounds to me like you guys are doing something very simple and making it very complicated. I've never had to jump through so many hoops to get footage off of a DVD.
