QT .mov from DVD won't copy to hard drive!

Ok, I'm baffled. I've done this countless times. I had to record a 15 minute interview for someone in Dallas (I'm in Louisiana). Shot on the HVX in DVCPRO-HD. Saved as NTSC-DV and burned to a data DVD. Guy in Dallas has the same Quad Core Mac model and set up I have.

When he tries to copy it to his media drive, at about 3MB it gives him an error message that some of the data can't be read/written.

He has TWO copies of this file on two different DVDs I sent (for safety). Both do the same thing. DVDs are read-only, so there's no permission thing to interfere.

I'm stumped and he needs this stuff to work ASAP. He will try another Mac later today, and I have him trying to a different hard drive (he swears there's room on the drive, but I never trust anything I'm not sitting in front of myself, old IT habits die hard).

At worse, I'll dump out to Mini-DV and overnight for Saturday delivery. Lord, it's been so long, do I even remember how to work a tape deck?

Any ideas? It's just a 15 minute long QT movie file. Imports into FCP (5.0.4), plays fine in FCP. It also won't export from FCP to a local drive as a new file, either. Same error message at about the same place on BOTH DVDs.

Guys?

Guys?

Are both of the machines Power PC or Mactel, or is it a one of each situation? I've had something similar dealing with some files that were done on a PPC, but then wouldn't load on a Mactel. Oddly enough, the Mactel was able to work with the files directly from the DVD.

Again, guy in Dallas has the same Quad Core Mac model and set up I have.

The Quad Core Mac is a G5, they're almost identical set ups, so that's not it. I guess he could edit from the DVD, but man, that's got to make editing dog ass slow, eh?

On your drive, you run a disk warrior or whatever type of scan? Any chance the place where you saved the NTSC-DV QT version there is a bad sector or such?

cheers.

Ya, its possible the NTSC DV file has a bad sector, it happened to me before on a file that i backed up to DVD-R, a 4gb NTSC DV movie. And like an idiot, i didnt test the file before deleting the one on the HD. For 3 years i couldnt play the file, then like 5 months ago stumbled upon that DVD-R and put it in my Macbook Pro and like magic the file was fine, and it trasnfered over. Weird.

But do you still have the DVCPRO HD version? You may want to export it again to NTSC DV for him, instead of sending him the same copy everytime on a different DVD-R.

There are two totally sepreate copies of this footage. Both exported seperatly, same setting, same Sequence, to two seperate drives. Again, I put each of these two seperatly created copies on different optical disks (it takes up 4.2 MB on each DVD). Both act the same. So, bad sector is not it. Besides, both originals in their original folders play fine for me in QT Player, which rules out bad sectors.

He's tried on two Macs, same problem, sending one of the disks back for me to test. I tested before sending, no problems on my end.

Two files, created seperately, to two different drives, burned to two different DVDs.

I just re-burned both originals, and they play fine on all three of our Macs here.

Ok, more info. Just burned some footage to use in a seminar I'm teaching at the New Orleans Shorts Fest this weekend. Get set up, go to copy these clips from the DVD burned in my G5, and a different brand of DVD, to my Firewire drive, and tried to the system drive, and it happend. Says there's missing data in the self-contained QT file I made, and can't copy. Get home, the computer that burned this disk, m Quad Core, copies it fine. Will try burning via network to my Powerbook's DVD player and see what happens. Fortunately there was other footage I could use in it's place. But I need it for sure tomorrow. Going to save it out straight to the FW drive I use to teach with. Then Monday morning start trying to figure this out...

This is just so freakin' werid. I've seen a few rare posts about this recently, and always just blew it off as some werid user error. But I'm a cert'd trainer, pre-ordered FCP v.1.0 before it shipped, retired IT Engineer, so it's not like I'm an idiot, well, not usually...
