noise of person getting run over

So in this short I'm making I have one of the characters get run over. I did it by rotoscoping them over 18 frames, so I've got all that and it looks good. I also have the sound of the car speeding down the road.

Now I need to record a believable thud or some sort of noise for when the car impacts the person, and also I'm not sure what kind of scream or reaction the person should have. I have a shotgun mic that I can use to record the sounds.

Any ideas on how to get the thud sound or what kind of reaction from the person getting hit?

Thanks,

Ernesto.

Whenever I have been hit by a car, I grunt real loud, and that is the truth. You can go to sounddogs.com and probably find something that will work. They may even have a foley sound. Relatively cheap as well.

I agree, there is the sudden exhale, as you are jarred and the breathe blasted out of you.

As far as the thud, wrap a towel around a good wood bat, nice and thick, slightly damp for that splat as tissue is mashed. Wrap a couple 1" dowels in another towel, for the cushioned sound of bone snapping under muscle. Wrap that in a leather jacket, for that impact slapping skin, maybe a layer of fabric to soften it a bit, make it a less focused hit. Then swing away! But, for the sake of your mic man, watch the back swing?

Next, slow it down maybe 30%, and a little bass.

I seem to remember Lloyd Kaufman from Troma saying the sound effects guy on one of his movies used a dead pig and a baseball bat...

I was going to say dead pig carcass....or take the camera/sound recording device to a butcher shop and see if you can whack their meat for them...

What you should remember is this.....nearly every sound effect that is placed in a movie sound track is a combination of sounds. For instance the gunshots in Magnum Force or Dirty Harry. They were a combination of different gunshots with reverb added and/or sweetening. So a car hit would be a combination of sounds including metal denting/glass breaking/body getting hit/ grunt or scream/tires screeching. I think mostly it would be subjective because every car hit is different. If you haven't witnessed or been hit by a car you probably wouldn't have any idea what it would sound like. And most people haven't done either and even if you have (and again I have) you probably wouldn't be able to process the sound anyway.
