Top 10 DVXUser Secrets To Good Audio

fredrick they are more like guidelines... you can use anything for anything, but some patterns are better than others for various jobs.

the hyper is often used indoors because it has better rejection of reverb, and picks up full rich dialogue. the shotgun is usually used outdoors because they have better rejection of background sounds, at the cost of a slightly different sound.

shotguns can be used indoors if the conditions are right, and hypers can be used outdoors if the conditions are right.

as for effects, anything goes - its up to what you want.

Tim is right, it all does come down to personal preference. For me I have a mic that I use for different circumstances. Here is an example:
Indoor dialogue: Oktava in BBG
Exterior Dialogue: Oktava in BBG
Exterior Dialogue in Wind: Oktava in BBG w/ Wind Jammer
Exterior Dialogue in Higher Wind: AT4073a in Softie
Exterior Sound Effects and interior Foley: Sennheiser MKH416
Newscasts, ENG, or Exterior Interviews: AT815
High Risk Situations: Rode NTG1 (because if it breaks I don't care)

I have a Sennheiser G2 wireless kit but I avoid using it whenever possible because I believe that my wire sounds better than your wireless :)

The ultimate moral of the story is that you can use anything for anything, but experiment and find out what works best for you and what you feel most at ease using. From my limited pro experience there is nothing worse than being in a situation where you are not comfortable with the gear that you are using and it causes you to sacrifice quality.

ugh... yeah, damn right to that. thats why im buying lectrosonics.. i have sony wireless, but here in sa on ENG tv run/gun stuff I need to use my wireless quite a lot as primary audio source. no way jose.

lectro is gonna put my mind at ease... true, not as much as a cable, but at least i can sit behind the camera man. :)

NOTE: i only use wireless if a really really have to - like jeremy said. this may well change with the lectro.. we'll see. (i doubt it)

Oooh another good sticky. Man, this is great stuff.

Now, Which mike do I buy?

KIDDING.

Thanks once again.

Ask for "Quiet on the set!"

If it is between words then you can just cut it out and replace with room tone. If it's over dialog then you can ADR (loop/re-record) it or live with it.

Good luck

How do u make ADR sound not like ADR?
If you have an NLE that supports VST plugins, you can use something like the free "Classic Reverb" filter from Kjaerhus Audio. It has about two dozen presets to mimic different environments, and you can fiddle with the controls to create your own.

Based on the collective advice of the great folks here, I bought an Oktava MK012 mic with a hypercardioid capsule from a forum member (and an XLR cable from a forum member as well). Being a total newbie, I ran an indoor sound test on my HVX which I summarized here: http://feraldream.vox.com/

Hope some of you find it helpful.

What mic should I... (Oh damn! Somone's already asked that) No, listen, how about a good location mixer? I've been trying to find a battery powered 3-4 channel mixer that takes both balanced and unbalanced (radio mic) inputs, has a VU meter, supples phantom power and outputs a reference 1000Hz signal. They are not thick on the ground for the DVX market.
