What to use for white balance?

Hello,

Any best practices for what to use to set white balance? I'm sure that a piece of white paper is less than ideal for a variety of reasons. I imagine that there's a buy-able or DIY option for something that's portable, but resilient, appropriately sized, right color, etc. What do you use/recommend?

Thanks!

speaking of white balance, I was playing around with the white balance on a canon xl1 on the weekend trying to warm up an indoor shot and realized something new.

My right eye sees yellower then my left.

In the viewfinder, white looked yellow with my right eye but when I looked into it with my left, it looked whiter with a bluish tinge.

anybody else notice this or are my eyes out of wack?

I'm exactly the same way. I don't know what it is, but I'm with ya, man.

yeah, I was at the eye doctor the other day and my right eye is way different from the left. The doc said that's from looking into a viewfinder every day.

I just bought a white balance kit from warmcards.com. On one side of the card is a shade of blue that, when used as a white balance, warms the shot. On the backside of the card is a true 100 IRE white. I've used them for a couple shoots and I'm quite pleased with the results.
