Can anyone point me in the direction of some good settings for exporting 16:9 out of FCP, quicktime conversion? Compressor? MP4? H3.624?

Been looking can't find any other threds? Anyone? :)

What are you outputing for? Web, DVD? I just save it as a self-contained QT movie for archiving. Depends on what you need the output file for.

sorry I mean for web, I've seen 3 minute files that are about 32Mb and 500px x 381px big with no pixelation. When I export as an mp4 the first half of the file looks great, the second half looks all pixelated.

Any ideas for good export work flow for 16:9?

For 4:3 stuff I usually go > quick time conversion > MP4 > set the data rate to about 900k/s, audio data rate 96.

Then export from mp4 to .mov as hinted mov in quicktime pro...works a treat

but These approx settings and everything else I've tried makes the 16:9 stuff from the HVX look terrible.. any ideas????

Ben you changed you avatar, now I'm all confused! :crybaby:

Have you tried the h.264, I think that's supposed to be the one you want to use. For the web though maybe decrease the frame size a lot. Say 320 x 240. I'd at least start small like that and see if you can get that to go. Then perhaps work your way up if you badly want bigger frame size.

cheers.

maybe your getting me confused I've had this avatar for at least a year ;)

tha'ts my problem.. I can compress to 320 x 240 no problem.. when it gets bigger have many problems.. I've seen some people compress to 32Mb for 4 minutes at a much bigger file size how do they do this... is there not a thred of suggested compressions from FCP??? anyone?

Check this one out, ready on Nov 1st! This is the one I'm VERY psyched about. Been in the making for what seems like forever! Check out these two links! First one is a PDF of the TOC.

"Motion, Shake, and After Effects are all covered as well as many techniques used in films and cameo's from some high profile Visual Effect Artists.
Attached is the copy of the TOC. Damian and Brian will be doing a book tour at some of the Apple Stores."

Since the book release go pushed back two weeks, I don't know the book tour schedule. But I'll check on it. FYI, I pre-ordered mine, cause these are going to sell like hot cakes! No pun intended, but this will be THE special effects cook book to have!

No offense intended, but just gotta say it because it is a major sticking point with myself and a lot of collegues who are visual effects professionals... it will be the "visual" effects cook book to have Ben. Special effects are performed on set and filmed by the camera. Anyway, that's all the rant I'll subject you to.

cheers.

Well, to quote Steve Martin, "Well excuuuusssssse ME!"

Effects are effects, no matter how their done. I hear professionals intermix the terms all the time. But, for your sake, I'll rephrase.

It's the VISUAL effects book to have, cause there's nothing SPECIAL about them. LOL!

Just kidding, couldn't resist...

I have a lot of friends who are compositors and 3D animators and they are very distinct about calling their materials Visual and not Special effects. And I know a few guys who do pyro stuff for stunts and they are pretty good to always call their stuff Special effects. So for me its just because of the crowds I'm around (and having been yelled at for interchanging the terms).

As for...

It's the VISUAL effects book to have, cause there's nothing SPECIAL about them.

LOL indeed. Minus the reference to the book, I might have to steal that line from you.

cheers.
