How do you guys back up an entire DV tape?

My approach is:

1) Ingest entire tape into my NLE using scene detect.

2) Name the files to match the scene number/letters from the slate.

3) Save the files as a series of uncompressed .avi files to a DLT.

if i've already imported the whole tape into my NLE I just do an export out to tape. If i'm making a dub and haven't imported yet I connect my camera into my deck and just record onto a new tape in the deck

I used to connect my DVX to my GL1 via firewire and make the dupe. Not ideal... but it worked.

I just keep the files on an HDD, and throw the tapes in a bin. 300gb HDD holds about 22 hours of Mini DV footage. External 300 GB is now around 125-135 bucks max. Thats how i do it. Ill probably delete the HDD's very soon, waste of space for the footage i have. Dont think ill ever find a use for it again.

Don't trust hard drives though. Not long ago, one died on me, but luckily I had all my video on another drive.

drop em to DVD's. There are programs that lay data over 3 discs. ( or whatever # of discs is neccesary for the data you wanna save)

That's what I do, too. I connect to any another DV camera via Firewire, and make a tape dub. Easy. Works.

The only drawback I had was not being able to get the timecode to transfer to the new tape... but I think that's possible too if you tinker with it enough.
