movies to rent when you've seen every movie

Are you like me and have seen every mainstream movie out there? Including most of the well-known indies and foreign films?

Then you know finding movies at the video store is a pain. This thread is meant to recommend little-known or unknown films to others in search of a new film experience.

I'll start out with:

Bee Season: A complicated little film about how religion can be used to manipulate people close to you to disasterous effects (not really about spelling bees)

The World's Fastest Indian: Not about Anthony Hopkins playing an Indian. A Forest Gump meets Little Miss Sunshine like tale. Sweet and beautiful.

Rent Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.

I only know about 2 people besides me and my friends who have actually seen it. I honestly have never laughed harder in my entire life.

Start going anime/animation and documentary.

Try

Pefect Blue
Millenium Actress
Memories
Cartoon Noir

Salesman - not really obscure, but just saw it again - shame more docs aren't made like this

Or just go TV.

The Office season 2 (US) has to be the best DVD compilation known to man - only paid 30 bucks for it on Amazon - LOADED.

Classic. I love the entire series. It was made about an hour from here, so that's kinda cool to me, too.

great picks AloysiusK, i think the easiest way to see a great movie to pick a criterion you havent seen?

Rent Larry Clark's BULLY if you haven't seen it yet. It's like KIDS, it'll haunt you. It was filmed rigth where I live.

Wow, I've seen maybe 1/20 of the films mentioned here.

Someone asked how far back I'd like to go. If a movie is great, I'll watch it, but I tend to shy away from anything before the 50s (and the 50s is pushing it). There's a point where I just can no longer relate to the situations/characters because it's such a different era.

But I love It's A Wonderful Life (mainly because I can relate to Christmas) and Sunset Boulevard (because Hollywood really hasn't changed at all). Citizen Cane was okay (made a little better when I learned about the history of its making). There's definitely something beautiful about Cassablanca, but personally I just couldn't get into it. Hated Some Like it Hot. Gone With The Wind was bloated and too much. Just to give you a feel for my taste.

watch the passion of joan of arc, you will surprise yourself. Watch it with music. I thought the same way as you til i saw it. Its from 1928 but doesnt feel like it. its just different.
