HDV monitoring in Premiere

Is monitoring my HDV work directly from the timeline on a HD monitor possible in Premiere Pro? Like with an Edius system?

I got different answers from different people I know. So I wondered if someone here might know, and maybe is actually able to confirm that it is possible.

It doesn't say in Premieres homepage or on Cineforms homepage either.

Premiere 2 has a setting that lets you see what you are editing on another monitor connected to the comp. I have a 17" and and a 20" wide dell lcds and when you bring the setting up you can choose the monitor that premiere is not using to preview your work...

Maybe if you have the HDTV connected via DVI you can selected it as the preview monitor...

go to the program monitor and click the little circle on the right and go to
playback settings and you'll see the selections right there...

I like Edius, but I looked for a feature like that and could not find one... you can only do it if you buy on of those cards or breakout box they have.

Try it and let me know if it works.

Displaying your HD timeline in realtime is a function of the video card.

I edit HD in PPro2 with Cineform's AspectHD and an nVidia Qudro FX540 which gives me a 1920x1080 component out to a 42" plasma.

A function of the video card, but if the program doesn't give you the option to send the video to an external source, how are you going to view it unless you have some sort of breakout box.

I are you using the setting in premiere to send it to you plasma or does the card comes with a utility to send the video?

I haven't seen a setting like that in Edius.

Its a function of the video card driver, that's why Adobe has a list of "approved" video cards with their applications. The FX540 does come with a breakout box for analog HD that goes to the plasma display.

I also use the Dell 24" LCD monitor and can display full resolution HD through the DVI output from the FX540 but it means switching between the HD output and the interface. [That's what I did before I got the plasma].

Most video cards these days are using an overlay and I'm sure that you could configure many of the newer PCIe cards to display from the overlay. It was a bit tricky but fairly straight forward once I spoke to someone at Cineform's technical support who explained how to set it up correctly. The reason they helped me is because I'm using AspectHD.
