Anyone notice this?! New Rail Support System...

Okay, well the "soft" stops thing helps that issue. But still, what if you need 3 or 4 marks in a scene? I mean, you can always just put some white camera tape and make marks with that- but if you're going to manufacture a follow focus, shouldn't you include the main thing thats going to help you "follow" or know where the focus is.

I honestly dont see the bigger benifit of the white marking area over dual hard stops. Have you used a hard stop follow focus before? Being able to shoot by myself and have the limited crew do something else like lights , dolly, help direct etc... i so great. no waste having someone pull focus

Joel rocks for sure! He won't put out anything that he isn't proud of and his designs are awesome and they work! His prices are fair and realistic. I along with others are waiting patiently for his next product release. ANd from what I have been told his new stuff will blow people away. I believe him .

The thing im anticipating the most is the Shoulder Support system. Something i definatly need, and im glad i didnt get a DVRig Pro, im sure i will LOVE his. PICS !!! ARRGH!

I have shot with hard stops, but like I said before- they're only good if you have 2 absolute points you need in critical focus. Maybe you're just a better focus puller than myself or the AC's I've worked with and only need a start and an end mark.

What if, for instance, you have a character in the foreground holding out a gun pointing it at a character in the background. You want to rack from the guy in the background to the guy in the foreground and then to the gun. You can put your hardstops at the guy in the foreground and the guy in the background, but where's your mark for the gun going to go?

in those cases, i would practice the shot and do it till i get it right. The little bit of extra time in those Rare occurances where i would need to do 3 different focul points like that is worth it for the hard stops for myself.
Tho id personally try and not do a cliche' shot like that if and when i decide to do some gun stuff w/ cops or criminals

Of course you can do that, but the point of a follow focus and focus marks is to save time and by not having a marking plate on complex shots, your going to be wasting precious time practicing and repeating it until you finally get the right mark. And as we all know, time is money. Personally, I wouldn't want to waste my time or anyone elses time when I know you could easily just use a follow focus thats markable. My point is, it doesn't seem like it would be too hard/costly to include one in the design. I can't think of a reason how it would hurt you (choose to ignore it if you want, but at least its there if you need it) so why leave it out of the design? I'm just curious as to the reasoning behind this.

And I hate to threadjack and get too off topic, but this bothered me and I feel I have to say something. I was just using that setup as a hypothetical example. Even if it were to be in a film I shot, why do you say its a cliche? What makes it so? I told you nothing about the lighting, the location, the actors, the wardrobe, if there was or was not a camera move, or even the framing. Based on the little info on the hypothetical setup I provided, how can you say that it's a cliche shot? Is it cliche to have one guy point a gun at someone else? Or is it cliche to rack focus? If anything, I think it's cliche for you to assume that a situation with one man pointing a gun at someone else has to involve cops or criminals.

And I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get so aggressive and I hope you don't take this too personally.

yowza!

we arent talking hours of practice to do that one shot, i can only go on the info you gave me Noah, and that info is what appears to be a 10 second 3 rack shot. How long could it possibly take to get that shot, and will all the time saved because you can garuntee that youll hit your marks with a hard stop and not have to waste the time of someone who could be helping do something else instead of pulling focus on other shots ALL day, you can spare the extra 3 minutes to practice this one shot.

Firstly, never said 10 seconds- that is info I never gave you haha. But so a 10 second, 3 rack shot is cliche? Anyway, i'm ready to let that one go.

That's the difference between us I suppose- I'd always have an AC. Don't get me wrong, I'd never take someone away from G+E or Art department or anything to pull focus. Partly because that would mean that particular department would be down one person and would slack because of it and partly because a grip isn't an AC and wouldn't be able to pull focus properly in the first place. If it were my shoot, I wouldn't take someone away, I'd hire an additional, and to me, very necessary person.

If it's just you and you're two friends shooting around in your backyard, I can understand the lack of an AC. And with the lack of an AC, I can understand the want/need for hard stops. Even still, I don't see why there wouldn't be a marking plate in addition to the hard stops? If there's anyone from Hyson Films reading this, why didn't you include one in the design? And is it possible to still add one? Because if it is, I think it would be very smart for you guys to do so.

I have the current Hyson HVX MB and FF. I will buy all of Hyson's new products. Joel is a great designer and the price is very reasonable, imo.

I can't wait for the new products to become available.

Hey Cynic. Yes. It is a great design for run and gun. I am waiting on the Brevis to ship, then the MB and FF will be mounted to rails. I have the rail mount bits ready to go. I am also using a Varizoom for crane and remote head. Hopefully the remote FF system will work also. A lot of testing to follow, soon. Not long now for the Brevis to ship. Drooling here for months. :D

Nice, ive got them mounted on the M2 rails and baseplate right now.

Ive heard nothing but great things about the brevis, hope you inform us all of your testing when it all comes together for ya.

Absolutely, I will keep you apprised. I would say in the 2-4 weeks, a lot of people will start posting Brevis footage.

It will be nice to add the new Hyson products in about a month.
