Hello DVX'ers, :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

I am new to the board (just bought a 100b from Ramsey @ Evs - thanks R!) and looking for the best Boom mic for the Buck. Sorry to those threads that might have discussed this already, but there is too much to sift through, and I ain't gettin' any younger :D....

Anyhoo, All the Sennheiser mics I see are in the thousands...any recomendations anyone?

Thanks for your time :dankk2:

OK...so I just noticed Jeremy's extensive post....just looking for opinions and experiences with several mics that are out there, I suppose. Apologies to the guru's who are sick of newby questions :-) I have seen frustration from senior members about newby questions and suggest that the moderator of DVX User come up with a section called "newby questions" (I don't seem to see one here,) so that we won't tax the eyes of the seniors ;-)

(....bows 3 times and exits thread)

Gee, yes I actually did Joe. Being new to this site, I still have to learn its nuances. If I had the power to delete the thread, I would have.

Did you miss it in my thread where I apologized for that and gave a helpful link to others?
Thank you for your gracious response and concern.

I'm sure Joe's comment was only to address where you mentioned the stickies which suggests that you were going to then read them... and then the next day you post about "a site that will answer your questions" (implying that this site would not).

Some new guys come into the forum and feel insulted if their questions are not immediately responded to... when there are other factors that are slowing the flow of information. We're very proud of the extensive library of info that is free and easily accessable on this site so the implication that this other site (with super out-dated info) is somehow superior in this regard feels like a shot across the bow.

I'd say most people on this forum have read that shotgun review... I read that 4 years ago when I very first talked myself into buying an me66. Notice in that review that the me66 kit is listed at $380... which is what I paid for mine back then... now Sennheiser thinks they can sell that mic for $480... which is what these mics were for the past 1.5 years... recently you'll see while the MAP is still $480... that you can get this mic for close to the old selling price again.

There is one reason for that. The AT-4073a... which is about $500 from Location Sound by the way. The 4073a does everything the me66 does... only more of it... more side/rear rejection, more reach, and a much richer, fuller sound. The bass cut on the me66 is almost crazy... even before switching in the bass cut the me66 doesn't have as much bass as other mics have WITH THEIR OWN bass cut engaged! So for me it was comical to think that the me66 was selling for within $50 (about a year ago the me66 was $480 and the 4073a was $530)... Had it not been for the sharing of information then I think the me66 could have sustained the sudden 26% price increase.

A few years ago buying mics was mostly a mystery... all of us were subject to the same (extremely limited) mic reviews and the recommendations of others who either bought a mic out of tradition or a friend's recommendation... with nothing more then that to back up the choice. Fortunately now we have resources like DVXuser where lots of people have spent thousands of $$$ to really hash out the differences in microphones.

Hi Mattin,

Thank you for your reply, and my apologies if I came off short. After perusing the site, and finding a plethora of posts, and pages upon pages of information, I mistakenly posted a question without learning how to use the site first. (one new user said they literally spent 34 hours getting through the audio posts.) That kind of time is not easy to find.

I was only miffed by the "gee....matter of fact" nature of Joe's post, not by the fact that my question was not answered. He assumed I knew what a "sticky" was, and I only found this out yesterday.

I was surprised to read that you thought I was referring people to another site in a manner that made it sound "better and more informed." That was not my intent at all. I was attempting to make good on a posting that would have otherwise been redundant and worthless by doing what I should have done in the beginning; leg work.

After reading other threads, I got the feeling like the senior members were sick of hearing these sorts of questions, and perhaps rightfully so. I equally felt (as a suggestion,) that it would be fantastic to have a "GREEN room" for new folks to the site, or newbie area where many of the basic questions could be answered without reprisal (maybe there is one that I cannot seem to find?) If there is an email or specified reading area that I could go to when I signed up that could explain how to use and navigate through this site, it might alleviate the frustration of some of the elder users. But that doesn't negate the usefulness of this site, nor the fact that it is an amazing resource, so I wanted to make clear that I thank the creators for bringing it to fruition.

Your information on the review is very helpful as well, and thank you for your time in addressing this thread. As stated above, I would have deleted the thread after I caught my error, alas, I did not find the "self-destruct" button.

Best wishes

Spiral,

Sorry to come off a bit short on my end.

I thought that the bright yellow color, the word "sticky", and titles like "New to audio-read this first please" and "Side by side shotgun shootout (with samples from multiple mics) would be self evident. Evidently they were not.

I am definitely not one of the most senior people here, and am also not one of the most informed.

But your posts did indeed strike me as somewhat insulting to those on this list that have spent countless hours contributing to one of the finest sections on audio in a video forum. Linking to a "GREAT site" with info that is far inferior to that contained in the stickies alone (much less the great material in the rest of the forum) bordered on troll like activity in my eyes.

BTW, Ken Stone's site is one of the best for users of FCP that there is. It's just the article that you linked to that I find out of date and inferior to the info in this section.

E-mail (and board postings) are often misinterpreted. And I am as guilty as anyone of doing so. So again, aplogies, and welcome to the board.

Hi Joe,

Yes, you are correct.....they ("stickies") were not evident because this style of forum is new to me. I am used to a different style of public forum, and again, I posted my question in haste, and felt quite embarrassed having no way to delete the thread, just went ahead and posted a link so as to answer the question I was asking, in case someone else was viewing the thread and wanted a link.

I could apologize yet a 3rd time, but I think this thread has already succeeded in making me feel like a heel, and probably ticking a few of you off to boot. It also has sufficiently wasted your time.

Communicating over the net can present its challenges, and the actions that I took were meant to be helpful, not insulting.

After viewing the FAQ section, I find that it would have been helpful to have a link entitled "What do I most need to know as a new user?" I will so some research and find out who I need to contact to suggest this, so someone else doesn't have to go through this.

You're fine.

Stick around. We're really pretty nice (well, most of us are) once you get to know us.

Jarred Land is the man you're looking for.
