Well, thanks for the note, but this is different. I dont provide a list to choose from, and this is not about who the best is (which is different) but rather about your personal favourite. Besides, you have to pick three, not one.

Cant you see the subtle differences in the tune of this thread and your one? (pun intended).

p.s: Calaghan, is that you in the picture?

Man, there is a difference between BEST and FAVOURITE. Its plain english. Dont you get it? Go get a dictionary!

An example might help: John Williams might be the best, but Hans Zimmer is my FAVOURITE.

jon brion
thomas newman
danny elfman

i just learned interesting stuff about the newmans. thomas is the son of alfred and randy is the cousin of thomas. randy held the record for the most oscar nominations without a win (16). Then he won for Monster's Inc and began his thank you speach, "I don't want your pity!" since then his record has been broken by sound re-recording mixer Kevin O'Connell has 18 nominations but not a single Oscar. funny stuff, eh?

1. Bernard Hermann
2. John Williams

There seems to be a John Williams backlash among film nerds, and why, i don't understand. Sure, he's way past his prime, but any single one of his scores between Jaws and Empire of the Sun is pure gold.

Regarding James Horner, listen to the score for Aliens, then listen to the score for Wolfen.

Horner has come out and said Aliens is one of his worst scores. Had NO time to put it together.

I'm not a big Horner fan...

Jerry Goldsmith is probably the best of my lot... Yes, John Williams is up there too. He can drive a movie with his score SW stuff or be just what it needs to enhance the film... Catch me if you can.

Now -- Go back and listen to some Franz Waxman and Eric Korngold. THERE'S some music!!

I also agree with Henri Mancini, though it's hard to get away from that 60's 70's pop orchestra sound.

- Hans Zimmer
- Craig Armstrong
- John Williams

(Who did Psycho? That's an excelent score- and how about the Godfather?)

1. Ennio Morricone- Definately one of the absolute best and one of the most under appreciated artists ever. My personal favorite of his is "John Carpenter's The Thing" if you havent seen it i would certainly recommend it.

2. Danny Elfman- If you don't know him then just watch "Army Of Darkness"

3. John Williams- Yeah, i wimped out and did it but... Star Wars... freaking moving!
