The problem with the noise reduction in AE is that it is spatial and only evaluates the current frame.

Some grain reduction is accomplished temporally which provides more control over the amount removed so it doesn't look so soft but can begin to look like plastic.

The newer grain reducing applications accomplish noise reduction by doing motion vector analysis, but they're still a bit pricey.

Hmmm, I've used the remove grain, but I thought the results were less than stellar. BUT, the footage was improved, so I did like it somewhat. See my issue here? I can't say that I "LOVE" it, but I can't say I didn't like it, because it did improve my footage.

I guess I won't vote :(

It was used on this piece here, and it was used to soften up the footage to give it a very graceful feel (Like a glass of wine)

However I wouldn't use it on anything other than a woman's face for normal (after using a mask), non-artsy shots. The results it makes are just too soft and too bluring to look natural. (You loose all detail on shots that are visibly grainy)

On still photos, we shoot ISO 1600 with our D70 and use Neat Image and get fantastic results! Too bad they charge extra for the AFX plugin, so I can't say weather or not it works well.

Check out what I did with it. Look at this page in the thread for the before and efter pictures. My tutorial is on the front page of the thread.

It looks good for a model shoot, but removing the grain from a horror movie is just a bad idea in my opinion.

Not only that but you lost all the detail in the wrinkles on the shirt, and some areas look un-natural (the background looks good though!)

Now if any of us ever film porns and want a high production value, this is the way to go! Skin is silky smooth.

Well I went back to my link and cannot see any wrinkles in the shirt lost by the noise correction. They are made more subtle, but they are obviously there.

I know the reservations about using it in a horror movie, but it worked very well in Stricken. Download and see for yourself.

I was quite impressed with the noise removal tool, but it definitely had to be tweaked differently for each clip.

That program looks too good to be true!? I use the Olympus E-500 and never go above 400 ISO cause it just is too noisy. Looking at a new fast lens....a 2.8 instead of 3.5.
If this company has noise reduction for video then I would love to see it!

Yeah, theres a program they have called "Neatvideo" for AFX. Try the still plugin for free on single images (as long as they aren't pay jobs) just to test out what kind of results you could get.

i also shoot with an olympus e500 and i actually can shoot ISO 1600 if i use neatimage afterwards. It does a good job of making an image noise free without reducing the details. I would jump on a video version of the software. Didn't know it even existed.

I can't imagine using 1600 ISO on the E-volt 500?! I will have that program!
What it all seems like is that our footage and still photos are in RAW format and we can process them like so.
After Effects or Neat Image?

Well, I have found that record company's & artists love grain removal. For skin, I would like to think that a much better result would come from good lighting and a great makeup artist. Having said that, I have reached for grain removal and it has saved me but its not where I want to live.

Can't speak for AE's remove grain - I just haven't used it enough to develope a love or hate for it yet.

That said, Noise Ninja is an absolutely amazing program. Superb. I've run DVX stills through NN and had fantastic results.
