Emergency P2 Card on shoot - 4 day shoot no data - how to retrieve lost video!

Hey Guys

I really need your help! I am on a 4 day shoot and loaded a P2 card with fully loaded with scence. We unloaded the card and placed into a Mac G4 to download. I first noticed that the text file was missing and tried to copy data onto harddisk. No data was on the clip. We have a crew of about 20 people on this shoot and a whole day is wasted. Is there any data retrieval app that will recover the lost data on the P2 card. If you guys come through Panasonic and the reliability on p2 will be restored.

Thanks

Macs are notorious for having issues offloading P2 card contents. The best approach seems to be to

a) Make sure the camera is not accessing the card when you remove it.
b) Write-protect the card.
c) Let the Mac recognize and mount the card, and use P2 Genie to offload and verify the contents.
d) Never try to ingest directly from a P2 card into FCP.

If you have a card that doesn't have a LASTCLIP.TXT file or is otherwise causing problems for the Mac, put the card back into the camera, switch to MCR mode, select the clip(s) and use the REPAIR option on the OPERATIONS menu.

I have tried your recommendation but there were no clips in the video folder to reconstruct. This is a lesson for me to now purchase a p2 store or use P2 genie.

Thank you for your help. We are continuing with the shoot and will use two HVX200 to complete this short. The p2 wit the problem has been removed and will not be used

If you eject the card before it's done writing, or the power goes off while the camera's still writing, apparently that can cause some incompatibility. There's a firmware update for the cards, make sure you're running the latest firmware to minimize any potential problems.

HI Barry!

I just checked to confirm the updated version of the card and find that everthing is up to date on the card.

Thanks for the boot camp! I would not be on this short without having gone to the New York Bootcamp a few months ago. I still have confidence with the Panasonic and P2. They rented the HVX and we are now using my HVX camera to finish the shoot with style. We are now going to redo the lost clips with two HVX's. The lost clips is a downer but we will keep on trucking with P2 and all DVXUsers support. You guys rock!

Is it just the Macboks with the P2 card slots that seem to have the trouble or is there a general Mac/P2 non-compatability even with the P2 store?

Macbooks don't have pcmia slots. There are no compatabilty issues with mac and P2.
Sometimes FCP has a problem importing files directly from a P2 card in a powerbook G4.
But I have never had any issues importing files that were backed up on a HD or DVD
data disc before importing into FCP to edit.

Wow, that's scary. I've never had this problem offloading P2 Cards into my HP nx9600 notebook. I do use P2 Genie (great proggy) and highly recommend it. Sometimes during downtime, I'll fire up Avid and edit those MXF's natively on my notebook just to see how things initially can cut together. Directors love this and especially if he/she realizes he needs to shoot more coverage that day.

I hope you get your situation sorted out . . .

I respectfully disagree. There have been tons of reports from Mac users who wind up having to restart their Macs because they lock up or suddenly fail to mount P2 cards.

I am one of those users. Who would have guessed I'd want my PC again after ditching it for the "almighty mac". Everytime I use a PC with p2 cards it is flawless. Everytime I use a Mac with P2 Cards something never goes right.

Perhaps BootCamp or Parallels would work? Anyone tried?
Parallels doesn't work because it only supports USB 2 as a USB 1 bus and because when you open the P2 manager app with any USB bus active with a storage device it will instantly crap out. I have had success using boot camp with P2, but it is also very wonky as well. I haven't tried to use it to update the firmware though. Perhaps I'll give it a shot this afternoon and report back.
