Owen? Where are you man? I'm so angry with you.

I got my "MY CHRISTMAS SOLDIER" DVD today and NOBODY told me it was about CHRISTMAS! Wtf? I've been duped.

I'm kidding. Shout out to Georgia filmmaker OWEN for spectacular MUST-SEE work on MY CHRISTMAS SOLDIER.

I pre-ordered my DVD and I got a nice surprise in the mail at work today. Popped it into my G5 for a quick look and I'm recommending whoever can spare the money to order yours now.

I had to stop watching it because my boss came in, but my quick viewing turned into full-screen exhibition. For those who don't know:

Owen shot this movie on an HVX + 35mm adapter and whoever mentioned that this combination down-rezzed on DVD looks like 16mm is pretty much on the nose. Shows what great direction and professionalism can do when applied to the Digital Age. There's awesome talent floating around on DVXuser, keep your eyes out for this guy.

Congratulations on a stellar product, Owen.

That sounds really cool, I'll have to check that out.

Seriously? That's awesome. It seems like uprezzed HVX would be higher filmic quality, maybe it's something to do with grain?

I'm watching it, finally, on my television at home.

Full Widescreen, no black bars. This movie is awesome and a great show of what the HVX can do on a professional shoot.

I think that the down-rezzing to SD has something to do with it. Compressing the macro-blocking issues that the HVX has. I won't say that it looks like film-grain, either, because what you see in a DVD (I'm using Harry Potter as an example of this) is DVD compression. What people on the boards fail to realize is that even these high-budget films suffer from DVD compression artifacts when thrown onto a SD DVD format. To me, there's no difference in the noise I see here than the DVD's that I own already.

It only helps that the Cinematography is off the freaking chain. Some serious high-budget quality lighting in this short, man. It's funny, because my GF is telling me to stop typing while she's watching it.

Here's Owen's thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=62087

There are great screen caps there that don't even do the moving footage justice. There's also a sweet Slow-mo shot in this movie that gave me goosebumps. I think because I know it was one of the HVX's key features being used at the right moment and not gratuitously.

Seriously, this was worth the wait and my cash. It drives home the point that, at this point in the game, these sub 10k cameras are plenty enough to get you outstanding visual quality.

Sorry, Owen, if I'm bragging on your short too hard. It's just really great.

Whew! You scared me -- I thought this was a new logo thread! ;)

Thanks for the kind words about the movie that kept me from entering HorrorFest! Now that I've got DVDs available I've started an official thread here:

A year ago I posted a 5 minute WWII short I did and got lots of great feedback. In making this longer film I tried to implement that excellent feedback, especially in the authenticity/wardrobe department. (And of course, during that time our good friend the HVX200 was released...) It has been a fun year!

...and thanks to Kholi and the other DVXUsers who pre-ordered. You helped make the replication run possible. Look for your names in the credits!

LoL. Yeah I meant to scare you.

I didn't even know my name was in the credits! I'm going to brag, now.

I'd love to know where you shot the train station at. I lived in the Atlanta/Marietta/Kennesaw area in Georgia, so I didn't see many passenger train stops.

Hmm... figured yours and Kholi's would arrive at the same time. Some shipped Friday, others Saturday. It's possible I, umm, saved the best for last. Maybe tomorrow will be your ever so lucky day!

It probably won't be... I'm holding yours for ransom. SMUGGLER'S RANSOM!
Bwahahahaha!
(just a little plug for your film there... Larry will send you the bill).
