Hi when we buy hollywood dvds etc. They mostly come with a back up of a dolby stereo track for people who dont have a dolby 5.1 home theatre. Eg. i play a 5.1 movie dvd on my laptop. And it plays thru my headphones. If i play that on a dvd player and connect it to a normal stereo TV then it plays there too. So is the laptop decoding the DOLBY 5.1 track and outputting a stereo mix to the headphones. But how does a normal dvd player take this signal and output it as stereo though the Normal RCA left right pins ? Is there decoding and downmixing hapenning within the DVD player ? Or does dolby 5.1 have an inherrent capacity to collapse into a normal stereo sound in the absence of 5.1 hardware ?

Ok so basically the player decodes and sends this to the LR channels right ? But i dont think a menu is needed. Many of the players are constantly outputting the stereo version at the same time as the digital coaxial or optical ? How come David ?

It's just the way they were set up, I guess. It doesn't hurt anything for them to do it -- you'll never be listening to the L/R outputs at the same time as the digital outputs.

Yes i understand now that a 5.1 dvd has only a 5.1 audio soundtrack and no parallel standby stereo soundtrack on the dvd itself. The stereo track is always created by the playing equipment which does a downmix. Thanks David. :)
