new set of Lectrosonic 400 series wireless

hello.

i got my first set of lectrosonics today in a happy saturday delivery fedex box!

i know there are bits and pieces of advice on lectrosonic stuff throughout the older messages on here but if someone could do me a favor and just give me some general tips on settings...

i have the UM400 and the UCR401

i am feeding it into a SD 442 mixer and i am powering the receiver off of the BDS v2 in my bag...

i have it setup and working with a sanken cos-11 that i ordered with the lectrosonic plug to go along with the new setup.

it would seem that depending on the level you set on the receiver that you can choose to have it be either a line in or a mic in on the mixer?

what are you guys (girls) using for the level setting in the receiver?

i assume the cos-11 is a fairly common mic choice for this setup, does anyone have any specific settings they have come up with for the transmitter that are cos-11 specific?

matthew

matt, ive never used the 401, but that is my planned upgrade when I have the money (It will replace my UCR100's while I continue with the LM tx's). You are right about output levels, and my general thought would be that a line level output would be prefered in this case... maybe someone else will chime in.

Congrats on the purchase, your rig is starting to fill out nicely!

you can set to muc - about -30 would be fine or 744
or line then - go till the end , set the pre until the picks would light the led , that have to be around 4 oclock , the line level is not full +4bu

ok thank you for the tips...oleg with it set for line i do in fact have to set the gain on the 442 till it hits about 4 o'clock.

wabbit shared his settings with me and with the rx set for +4 dBu when i send tone from the rx to the 442 i have to turn the gain to 4 o'clock to get it to hit +12 db.

i'll post it later but i had my wife read a couple of paragraphs from an article in american cinematographer and i had the lectrosonic 400 transmitter with a sanken cos-11 and i had the sennheiser skp-500 with a sanken cos-11 and then i had a sanken cos-11 hardwired and then i had a sennheiser g2 transmitter/receiver with the factory lavalier.

so i have four separate tracks with the exact same dialog being recorded on the same mic on 3 of the 4 channels and then a factory g2 sennheiser lavalier on the 4th channel.

the only exception is that the cos-11 on the lectrosonic is a red dot/reduced sensitivity.

i didn't ask for that but gotham gave me that one when i ordered the 400/401 and asked for a cos-11 wired for lectro's

i spent a good bit of time getting the levels all identical with the exception of the g2 factory lavalier mic.

i'll load the file tomorrow and put it up under a website and post the url.

i thought it would be a great comparrison to be able to listen to the same mic hardwired, through fairly pricey wireless and then through more entry level/documentary level wireless and then the factory lavalier.

there would be 3 db difference if you take l+r or only one of them in preamp setting .

put the tx at maximum for line or -30 for mic
give a ton when the cannel is left or right , put the pot on 12 o clocl , rise the preamp until you hit +20 dbu ( limitters off)
thats your preamp point

I did some A/B recordings with a G2 and my then new 401 last spring or so. I seem to have forgotten to post them up. Probably buried in my project archieves now.

I look forward to hearing your files matt.

Oleg if you set the wireless to +20dbu when you turn the mixer's limiters on the signal will get crunched, no? I keep mine under my limiters to avoid this. Am I missing or not understanding something?

Cheers

this preamp setting - if you give ton on 411/401 you get maximum 5 dbu output
so if you work normaly as me , you need to rise the level with the preamp ( first stage in line level ) till you get full csale 20 dbu the last point the mixer wouldnt distort

now you can mix as me and hit the +10 in evereg picks

to close the limmiters for gain setting - then open them as usial
ps - some very nasty momerntary high levels could be more then +5 dbu so when you rise the preamp go 2-3 db back to be on the safe side - or just lover the reciever output after the setting for 3 db 9 not 5-2), not -30 but -33

ok i actually understand all of those replies!

i did actually remember the left/right +3 dBu thing when i was playing around at setting the levels with wabbit's settings that he so graciously shared!

so oleg's method is to just flip the switch to shut off the limiters, send the tone from the rx to the mixer (442 in this case) and then adjust the gain till it hits +20

then turn the limiters back on.

oleg, what do you set the limiters at on your 442?

i too am wondering if the limiters would make the +20dBu force you to hit the limiters very often?

or is this one of oleg's tricks to play with the headroom and get the average levels higher?

i'm going to try this later on and see if i can tell the difference...

but first i need to get those lavalier test files off of the 744t and put them up on the web.

OK, I see what you are doing.

I backed off the 401 to +1dbu and that helped. It is now near impossible to distort the input (I can't do it). Thanks Oleg

wabbit, are you saying that you now have the rx setup->level = +1 dBu where before you had it set to = +5 dBu?

and if you are doing that, when you send tone, what are you setting the mixer to read?

i realized that in the other forums everyone is always asking for the magic settings for the dvx that everyone else must know but don't want to share.

i know i was the same way when i first got my dvx-100a and came on here, but in the case of audio when people have the same gear they quite often CAN share with you at least the magic settings that work for them!

i'm thinking we should do more cookbook/recipe sharing like what we are doing here with the 400/401 lectro's and the mixer settings!

maybe if we had enough people who were serious about learning everything they can to squeeze the most out of the gear we already have we could get Oleg to fly over here and we could all get together at some location that is centrally located as far as airline cheap rates/hubs go?

matthew

you pay the tickets and bring the beer
i boolshit and sign the autographs free .
ahh and you need to bring nice one female for the lavalier mounting session( less then 85) so you all stay tuned when ill show the inside leg mounting :-)

by the way there is no magic settings - you better know limitation of every peace of gear you are carrying with you/

this setting is good for not distort the mixer input stage and not go over the maximum gain the mixer could supply - it doesnt have nothing with recording device which is changing with every job,is it good for dvx ?-probably yes but if it was i was lowering the output on the mixer to -10 and if it was 302 for -4 db on internal menu .

most important that when you set your transmitter gain be generous about the levels , to low setting would increase your hiss , to high would hit the limiter
when you set up the um , make sure that regular conversation would light the secend green led , and very loud one the green and red .
if the conversation is mostly shouting , take the capsul down stars and place it lower on the chest ( double the distance =-6db) , that might prevent capsul overload and you will get much open sound ,
no magic tricks - but the common sense and knowledge of your equip .

so on my transmitter, i have the cos-11, and they gave me the red dot one that is "less sensitive" but it seemed like i had to put the volume about 3/4 of the way.

i haven't tried it yet with the settings that oleg posted, but does that sound right?

i would love to know who on here is using the um400 with a cos-11?

are you using the regular one or the red dot?

or if you are using the regular one has a resistor been added to lower the sensitivity?

on the thing about having oleg fly over and doing our own sound workshop i was very serious...

if 10 of us paid our own way to a hotel right at the airport in a city that is a big hub and has lower airfare and then we split oleg's airfare AND food and BAR bill would anyone be interested in that??

matthew

i use half dozen of the regular - dont know what is the 3/4 way , my sits around 11-12 o clock - depends on the person and mounting.

one thing - i cant boolshit and not smock , so think heavily before you will have to smell half package of rothmans in 4 hours .
look Mathew , there is bunch of new yorkers which can handle your request - its not so hard to find someone local who has good skills and good nature to do you real location audio class - so if you like i can ask around and it could be set up , not to mention you will not have to pay my Guinness bill:-)

my suggestion that if you have interest to hear me and make nice trip - you all come to hollyland - the most biblical place in the world , with quit crazy people who are living here and really some nice places to see and i would boolshit you for free few days in EILAT ( the best diving place in middle of east) ,
so take a plain , take your wife and come in the middle of january ( about 25c) - and i will pay for my own beer.
