Hi, I'm trying to edit my HVX footage, I am using Vegas 7.0 and I also have Quicktime Pro 7 and if I use Premiere Pro 1.5 I can export using the H.264 compressor, but it's not one of my options while using Vegas 7.0, although I can use other compressors such as Sorenson 3 etc. so how do I have access to H.264 while using Vegas 7.0?

Any help would be appreciated..

I can't export to h.264 unless it's .mp4 which sucks. I have to export as a jpeg .mov first then do the h.264 .mov in quicktime pro.

ya this is weird! I have the option to export as H.264 in vegas 6.0 but not the option in 7.0. whats goin on here?

has anyoen tried to export to h264 in 6.0? i read on here somewhere that altho you have the option it still cant be done...anyone confirm? i think quicktime h264 is sexy and i would like to use that for web.

What was in Vegas 6 that’s not in Vegas 7? My installation of Vegas 7 has the MainConcept AVC/AAC (*.mp4) templates which are H.264. My Vegas 6 installation had them too. Is that what you are referring to? H.264 works in Vegas 7 for me.

You mean H.264 and .MP4 are IDENTICAL or the same, just different name?
Yea. MPEG4 is H.264 otherwise known as AVC. Vegas 7 has it but you need to make your own templates. I think it comes with a default template and Apple iPod video. I have since made a bunch of templates for 1280x720p, 1920x1080i, and 480x270p (1/4 HD for web) so I forget which are the originals.

JohnnyRoy - I use Vegas as well but have not had an occasion to use the H.264 template. You mentioned you made a bunch of templates for this codec. I was wondering if you would be willing to share your settings.

Have a great day.

MPEG-4 is a family of codecs. MPEG-4 Level 10 is H.264 is AVC, but there are other levels of MPEG-4 that aren't.
Yup, my bad. That is of course more accurate. There are several codec’s for MPEG4, the one that Sony Vegas ships for MPEG4 is H.264 which is why I said they are the same but I should have qualified that as “the same in vegas”. Since you can install new codecs, not even that is correct so you are right.

Just click the Customize button and go to the Video tab and change the Frame size to Custom and enter the dimensions of what you want. The field order controls if it’s progressive or not and the correct Pixel aspect ratio (PAR) should also be selected.

For example:

  • HDV (1080i) has a frame size of: 1440x1080, Frame rate 29.976, Field order: Upper, PAR 1.333
  • HDV (720p) has a frame size of: 1280x720, Frame rate 29.976, Field order: None, PAR 1.000
  • HD is 1920x1080, Frame rate 29.976, Field order: Upper, PAR 1.000
  • My 1/4 HD Web format is: 480x270, Frame rate 15.000, Field order: None, PAR 1.000

It all depends on what you want to output. Obviously PAL users will change the 29.976 to 25.000.

So does this mean i can edit AVCHD footage from a sony HDR-SR1 in Vegas 7?

Viable solution? Export an uncompressed DV file (Or QT reference file - not sure about Vegas but Avid can export that) and open it in QT Pro 7. Proceed to export h.264

Works for me! (But I use Premiere)
