Best Editing Headphone Monitors.

I'm buying our editing team new headphones for their editing systems.

what, in your opinion, are the best headphones for isolating sound and editing audio?

i did hear good things about the sony mdr-7506, but i'm open to anything under $250.

thanks for your help! :dankk2:

I use Sony MDR-CD2000 (cost $200) and like them very much for nice and natural responce in all frequencies, esp. deep, precise bass. They are pleasure to use, even for many hours sessions.

I haven't used MDR-7506, but they seem to be very good choice also. If you work in noisy studio, they may give you better isolation, but I am not 100% sure how they compare to more expensive options like CD2000 for example.

The 7506's are probably the way to go. Just be aware of the inherent peculiarities of headphones versus studio monitors (colouration, perspective exaggeration, low bass response), and of course use studio monitors for the re-recording mix.

Ah headphones. I love messing around with headphones for some reason.

I personally own a pair of Sennheiser HD280's. I love them. They are usually around $99. I am also a big fan of anything Ultrasone makes. If I remember correctly, the HFI700's blew me away, but it's been a while since I've played with them, so I might not have the part number exactly right. The 7506's have been the industry standard for location work, but I don't like them all that much as the earpads don't hold up well, and over time, they don't stick as well to your head as the Sennheisers do.

I completely agree with Dave. I didn't try out the HD280 until fairly recently and actually prefer them to the 7506. I ended up buying another pair of Sony's since as much as I like the Senn my ears have just been trained on the Sony's and I am just too lazy to re-adjust. Especially since I still have 2 other Sony's.

IF I was buying my first pair I would probably go with the HD280. The only reservation I would have is that since the Sony is so pervasive I would not want to lose that consistency when listening on someone's else phones.

Cheers

I have the Sennheiser HD280's and spent all day today working on an M&E track. They are wonderful and they were incredibly comfortable for the whole 8 hours I was wearing them.

the 280's are good and I own them but I also have a pair of open ear sennheiser headphones and they allow your ears to breathe during sessions.

As an aside, I was pleasantly surprised that my Sennheiser CX300's have such a great frequency response. Bruce Williams, an audio engineer that has a weekly podcast at: http://www.audio2u.com/sinelanguage.htm introduced them in his Sine Language, Episode 009 - April 9, 2006. Of course they don't fill the bill to isolate external sounds, but they are undoubtedly the most comfortable you'll find for the price-performance (for everyday comfort, I prefer them to my AKG K171 or Beherdynanic DT290).

Good luck, Michael
