Sterling Microphone!! Good Or Not?

Hey guys,
I've searched all over this site (yes, through all the audio stickies and buried posts), but I can't find any threads about a mike called the Sterling ST31 (or its convertible counterpart, Convertible GT).

Maybe this just isn't a mike typically used, but my goal was to find a decent mike to use on my boom pole, and this is what has been recommended to me as a solid alternative to an expensive shotgun.

Here's a link, if you need it, but any feedback if you've used or heard of this microphone would be excellent.

Thanks!

(P.S. - Is a shockmount absolutely necessary?? THX again)

Wow...

This is quite possibly one of the worst mics for film applications I think anyone has every inquired regarding.

It is not a good alternative to a shotgun or even a cheap shot gun.

Furthermore, not only is a shockmount ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, anyone operating a mic without one should be drawn and quartered.

Let me put it like this: Would you operate a mic without a power supply? Same this as operating without a shockmount.

If you are in that $100 price range then the best advice is the same advice as I always give... RENT!

You can get a $1200 mic for a day for $30. That gives you 3+ days of great audio (and this includes a boom, shockmount, cables, powersupply and wind protection) versus a mic that will never work for you.

This could be a decent mic. It looks like one of the Chinese imports... B UT it would be a BAD mic to boom. For one thing it weighs a TON. Well a little less but over 1/2 Lb with out mount or wind protection. And it is surely no Shotgun replacement.

It probably sounds better than some other mics people have asked about, but I wouldn't go there for location sound, non boom studio work in might be worth a listen.

Alright, thanks for the insights.
So, overall the Mk-012 would be a much safer bet? esp for boom miking?

Indoor or outdoor? You'll need a shotgun mic for outdoor stuff and the MK-012 will work well for indoor. With the Oktava you'll especially need decent windscreen protection and shockmount.

yeah,
for now mostly indoor. I just need a mike that's going to make the audio sound "hotter" and have more depth than the on camera one. I know half of the trick is getting the mike as close as possible, but does the Oktava also give the more resonant and full sound?
