getting acquainted with different film styles....

hey,
As a director and filmmaker I am trying to get acquainted with several different film styles. All of which I plan to practice in different short pieces.

But I would like to know more about the following film styles:
- French Impressionism
- Cinema De Quality
- French New Wave

if you knew of any websites or books that could help me better understand, and extend my knowledge of these film styles it would be much appreciated. As well as telling me of other film styles you find to be very interesting that I haven't previously stated.

I feel as if I, a filmmaker, have found my voice and found my 'style', but know very little about old and new styles and want to extend my knowledge and understanding of it.

hope you can help.

cheers.

As a joke and to continue my light hearted ribbing, I was going to post something. So I typed a few words into Yahoo and viola, my joke was not a joke but actually something you were looking for.

Sacré bleu!

French Marxist film makers, such as Jean-Luc Godard, would employ radical editing and choice of subject matter, as well as subversive parody, to heighten class consciousness and promote Marxist ideas.

Yeah. I'd recommend watching the films, preferable with commentary.

I am a big Jean-Luc Godard fan...and will now be listening to his commentary...

and mucho thanks for thinking about me (with the whole political interests).

cheers

Is this comparable in any way to Brecht's theory/practice of Epic Theatre?

French New Wave was a specialty of one of my film studies profs in college -- if you really want to get into check out his book on the subject: [amazon link]

Criterion. Defenitely.

And go watch some of Francois Truffaut films, that will clue you in on all the French New Wave. Also, go watch some of Wes Anderson's stuff; its kind of a French New Wave based, but with some other stuff thrown in.

Thanks...

As for Wes Anderson, believe it or not I have the cover of the Royal Tenenbaums (the drawn one) scaled up and tattooed on my back. As well as I have the Rushmore Academy Pin (the drawn one from inside the dvd) for 'Camaraderie'...

I am without a doubt, one of the biggest wes fans.

cheers.

I dont have the tattoo to compete with, but I can probably say you and I are the biggest Wes Anderson fans. And I get the feeling I am too, one of his biggest fans. I think I can safely say I've seen Tenenbaums more than 30 times as of yesterday. (and 6 additional times with commentary.)

Something tells me what you thought you knew of your style is going to fly out the window

as cliche as it sounds but the more you read and the more you watch the more you will realize how little you know even about your own style.

plunging down the ole rabbithole.

now its time to go watch horrorfest entries.

well this is exactly why i started this thread. I want, I feel a need to open my horizons and understandings to other styles, which ultimately might become part of my voice.
