How VEGAS can compete

You all know how final cut pro really took off, it was when an annoucement was made that cold mountain was cut using it. A huge marketing advantage, people raved and bought the program more than ever, not really knowing that cold mountain was shot on film and edited using match back. But hey the marketing worked!!!

So my point, imagine that Sony come out with an announcment saying that terminator 4 will be edited using vegas. I beleive sales would triple if not more just from that. So why is Sony not doing that, do they consider vegas a prosumer program, Why dont sony pictures edit one of their films on it??
Makes you wonder why Sony cuts their movies using Avid and Final Cut:zombie_smiley:

ok man, just pick a name of a popular film "ninja turtles" whatever, and see how vegas will fly, until that happens, vegas will always be considered an OK program. Yipee, come on Sony, do we matter at all

Sony Pictures has little to do with Sony Media Software. Besides, Sony has their pro-level Xpri editing system, which they'd likely use before they used Vegas.

Well Sony Media has little to do with Sony Broadcast, that didnt stop them from not support hvx200 with vegas.

Good point David about xpri, but you'd think that for a program like vegas that has certification now that sony would make it even more appealing, i believe that if sony even offlined in Vegas with a big name movie, Vegas would fly, but we all know how well Sony plays with others, dont we. cough...cough...DVCPROHD.......cough

That's how you would edit any 35mm film anyways. Before, you would need a $300k-$400k Avid Film Composer system.

2- I don't think Xpri is necessarily needed. And Xpri as it once was has reached end of life (a software-based Xpri should be coming back as part of Sonaps).

I don't think Xpri or Vegas have the ability to generate a negative cut list... which is what Cinema Tools (formerly a $1000 program) does for FCP.

There was certainly some interesting advertising going on with FCP / Cold Mountain though, as the products shown in their ads was NOT the same hardware used to cut Cold Mountain. They used Aurora hardware I believe, not Aja.

3- If the divisions talked together, it wouldn't be a bad idea for them to tweak Vegas to work as the NLE (and maybe even the audio mixing program too!). But that may not happen.

FCP took off because many years ago apple was the 1st to cater to hollywood types .. the world might be 96% PC .. hollywood creatives are probably 70% mac ... mac'ers tend to prefer apple products/software .. pretty much any software apple comes out with ( aimed at media) is going to be bought by Mac'ers ... before FCP Mac'ers had premiere and Avid ( at that time avid was very $$$$$$$$$$$$) .. i have found that just about all hollywood Avid editors have FCP on their own Mac's ...

before cold mountain many trailer houses were using/switcing to FCP mainly to cut cost and it worked ( 3-4 work station for cost of 1 avid) ..

hollywood is one of the last to change ..if it works why change ?
Avid works great for them .. FCP is making some inroads ..
hollywood waits for a product to be proven before it makes changes.

Vegas is 8 bit and does Video/HD very good ...
hollywood wants/needs 10bit+ ...
hollywood wants a neg match back ( in future that will not be needed) ..

be thankful that sony pictures/studio doesn't have to use sony products on all their movies , TV shows ... and Sony Studio's doesn't require anybody renting their stages to use sony products ....

has anyone here ever used avid? what did you think of it?

i used it for about 3 weeks for this editing class i took...man i hated it.

i fell in love with vegas's user friendly clickable interface. I didn't like how you couldn't just click on stuff with avid- it's all about that keyboard i guess.

Yep.

Yep.

Glen, yeah they were 4 Aurora Igniters, at $8,000 apiece. Just checked in the Equipment Appendix in Murch's book about the experience, "Behind the Seen".

I do wish Sony would do something along these lines, though. If they were to incorporate it as a new promotional push for all of Sony's products, ala "PC's creative people come to Sony", as Apple has done, they might experience a real resurgence throughout the company. If I could spend five minutes with Sir Howard Stringer, that is what I would tell him.

i used it for a few days and went strait back to vegas. I just ordered a keyed keyboard for vegas with a built in jog dial so it should make vegas even better.

The following site has a list of useful vegas shortcuts:

Also read the following:
In the official Sony forum, there's a thread about "EDITING FEATURES IN VEGAS YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE FOUND"
LINK: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.co...lies=12&Page=0

I learned a few useful ones such as the Vegas equivalent of slip and roll edits.

Hold "alt" to get slip edits. ALT while mousing over a clip... drag left/right to slip
ALT over a transition edge to slip trim the transition.

"crtl+alt" gives Vegas equivalent of roll edit.

A lot of the most useful shortcuts are the modifier keys, and you won't see that on a special keyboard. Just remember your shortcuts- its free and it's ultimately faster.

I like it so far, im shotting another project for work tomorrow so ill have to edit over the weekend so ill let you know how i like it.
