A sad state in American Cinema ?

This reminds me of when the first one came out and my Cinema Studies professor sounded like he was going to cry because it was number one.

its a societal evolution. there will always be people that prefer a good film but with everyone being wholly addicted to television and its climactic points every 2 and a half minutes or whatever people just arent willing to sit through a 2 hour movie especially a character based slow film.

michael bay directs television movies with an action sequence every 10 minutes and look how well he does in the box office.

i blame all the stuff hollywood puts out now on television...and michael bay.

ps. i saw jackass 2 on opening night and laughed. laughed incessantly. but i also saw the science of sleep and it was no eternal sunshine; but delightful nonetheless. gondry is a genius.

Gondry is great, but he can't write as well as Kaufman. Speaking of him, his next film will be staring Philip Seymour Hoffman. :)

I met this girl that I've been hanging out with for a few weeks. Cute girl. Really like her. Then she told me that she willfully CHOSE to see Jackass 2. I stopped calling her and have no interest in ever talking to her again.

I dont see what the big deal is. No one thinks af Jackass as a cinematic masterpiece. Its just a good time, isnt that what movies are supposed to be all about.

movies are about a lot of things. many of them are as undeserving of my time and money as this one. hey, maybe i should write a book of reviews: "Terrible Movies I've Never Seen".

That does sound like a good idea. Im not arguing that point I dont think its a movie that everyone would want or have to see but I dont see why people are upset about it doing well.

Jackass 2 belongs on TV, not in the theaters. TV has truly crossed over. It's amazing how tenuous people are about going to the movies and spending there hard earned dollars and this is what they spend it on. This is the wrong thread for this topic, but as a DP, I to am distressed at the state of movie making in this country.

I see what you mean. Its messed up how people dont go to see great movies anymore but Jackass isnt the reason for it. the reason is pirating. Any idiot with a computer can get whatever they want to see and save 10 bucks. thats what bothers me. im not saying Jackass is a great movie but I like that in this country you can make a movie about most anything you want whether its well accepted or not.

I disagree

I hardly ever go to the movies anymore and it isn't due to piracy. It's simply that there is nothing out that looks appealing.

I will go see Scorseses new flick though.

Nothign compares to the the bigscreen no matter how cool your home theatre is.

Me too. If I want to see a movie I see it in the theatres but you cant deny that overall piracy is the reason ticket sales are down. I dont think the quality of films has nessacerily gone down though.

And I will definitly see The Departed too.

Living in Hollywood I am always amazed at the way people treat film like it all should be a Rodin sculpture. There is room for evreything. Go out and make that serious drama that makes "Citizen Cane" look like "Dude Where's My Car?"

Totally disagree (which is fine, isn't it?).

I would fathom the amount of people actually engaging in piracy would be a neglible amount to people who actually go see movies.

The biggest weekend ever in box-office history was recorded on 07/07/2006 (Pirates 2). The Top 7 Box-Offie weekend's ever have been since 2004.

Are Numbers down ? Yes. But higher than last year and we're only on Oct 3rd (Note: Figures for 2006 are at an annualized rate).

I do not doubt Piracy is taking a bite out of the box but believe it is affecting the music industry much more than the film industry. Going out to the movies is still entertainment for families, kids, college students and dates.

The movies just suck.

Agreed. The one movie Ive seen in theatres this year that I actually enjoyed was Little Miss Sunshine. Everything else was mildly discolored poop-of-an-excuse for rich Cali-folk to waste money on celluloid and Adam Sandler-style comedy.

Way I see it, if it has a fart joke, (and on most occasion, a dog-humping-leg/object joke) its crap, and needs to be sent ravinesedge's way so he can get rid of it for good. I dont go to theatres because I know I wont like it.

Glad you posted that John. I've been telling people forever that movie ticket sales aren't "down". It's a freaking conspiracy move by the Studios so they can charge higher ticket prices ("Poor us, it's the only way we can combat piracy") and pay everybody else who works on movies less money ("sorry, but you know, with the piracy thing and all"). And I'm tired of studios saying they don't make money off of theatrical anymore like they used to. They only start making money once the movie hits DVD. Well duh, that's cause you've raised your budgets to account for that extra profit margin once the movie hits DVD. If there was no DVD (like it used to be) then you would lower your budgets, hence, magically, allowing you to make a profit theatrically again.

Generally shi**y movies lately - yes I absolutely agree. However piracy isn't the leading cause (IMHO). Yes - it occurs, but it's a small subset of the general populous. Many people are simply waiting to rent those same shi**y movies at home.

Ticket sales might be down (overall) but the theatrical release is also viewed by many majors to be the marketing campaign for the subsequent DVDs, games, fast food, pillow cases, etc., marketing initiatives.

Scorsese - yeah I'll be there (in a theater) for that.
