I'm trying to match up some hvx 24pn footage to some 24p footage and i can't quite figure out how to add a pulldown so when i edit in a 29.97 sequence my clips arn't sped up.
Ahh might need Ben to confirm this, but when you put the clips down onto a 29.97 sequence and render them, isn't the render simply adding the pulldown for you?
No, render does no pulldown. You're putting 24p into a 30p timeline? Did you ingest it with the pulldown option checked in the P2 Import window? If so, and if you did NOT pass it through the Frame Rate Converter (which it "sounds like" you did), it should just drop into your timeline just fine. If it's giving you sped up footage, the only time I've seen that is if you've applied the Frame Rate Converter, which, unless you did purposful over/under cranking, is a major no-no, it does something VERY different from the pulldown.
You could just save the 24p clip out as a 30p (I'm assuming 30p) and re-import it. Any quality loss shouldn't be visible.
I mix frame rates fairly often, and I never see any speed changes, only the occational need to render the clips that differ from the timeline fps setting. But just droping a 24p clip into a 29.97 timeline should NOT give you speed changes, by itself, without using the Frame Rate Converter first.
Can you tell me more about what you did to ingest these clips? What have you done to them since you ingested them?
the only pulldown option i have when importing the p2 footage is to remove the pulldown. not to add it.
I'm trying to add this footage to some taped 24p footage in a 29.97 timeline.
so i have 2 projects right now. one ntsc dv 30 base and one 720 24 base.
when i just add the hd clip to the dv timeline it's sped up and i'm trying to fix that.
Ah, now I see. Yes, you only have 24 frames to fill up each second now that you've done the pulldown for the 720p24 clip. I'd re-import that without the pulldown function turned on. Don't do the pulldown removal. It'll give you footage to match your NTSC.
You have to ingest for what you're editing. Don't apply the pulldown function if you're editing in an NTSC-DV Seqeuence, unless you've set that NTSC-DV seqeucne to be 24fps.
Ok, I just tested this. Shot a ceiling fan on slow at 720pn24, dropped it into a standard NTSC-DV Sequence, along with the same shot done in 480p30 and 480i60. All clips had the same speed.
Download a copy of FCP Rescue 5, trash (don't back up yet) and ONLY trash your FCP prefs. Run Disk Utility to Repair permissions on your system drive and repair all your other media drives.
You never did mention what Mac model you are on, and how much RAM you have installed, this would help a little bit.
You should see NO speed changes at all. All speed should be the same.
