why do hollywood studios make similiar movies all the time.

it seems thats how hollywood works.

when they hear one studio has a blockbuster script odds are the other studio read it at some point and makes a ripoff.

deep impact vs armageddon
madagascar vs the wild

endless comic book scripts once spiderman took off.

and now the illusionist and the prestige.

not saying these are the same movies but its like once one studio has the balls to make an off the wall project everyone in hollywood soon follows suit.

Because they tend to make a lot of money. Heck, Armageddon got into the Criterion Collection it was so acclaimed. (How Michael Bay pulled that one off, I dont know)... but yea, it seems to work for the studios- if they make money, they're happy.

Worse part is, almost EVERY movie coming out this year is a sequel, prequel, or related to another movie.

It's about capitalizing from the 'heat' these movies generate. And each studio convinced its film is the 'one' to watch.

Of course, one of the two is always wrong, and one is always right.

It's a [show]business dude. All about the $

i understand the whole wanting to capitolize on a previous movie's momentum. but these movies dont come out months apart but rather like weeks or a month apart.

I disagree. I think it's because of the enormous expense of producing a feature. Studios want to minimize their risk and one way to do that is with bankable stars and or material that already has a foothold in pop culture--such as Harry Potter.

So I say it's about mitigating risk. That's why so few original screenplays are produced, even the big boys have a hard time selling spec scripts.
Features take time to produce so I have a hard time accepting the notion of cashing in on momentum created by another studio's hit film.

When I mean 'heat', I'm talking about when a movie is put into development.

Then studios get similar scripts (deep impact vs armageddon) and it's away to the races.

almost the same reason they do remakes. its more of a safety net for them to copy a formula that is working.
