A sad state in American Cinema ?

Jackass belongs on TV, where it started.

But again, 90% of these movies are Shi* as John put it, its all about money now, who cares about fan base.

Chris burden had somebody shoot him in the arm in 1971 and called it art. At the time, some said, "Yes! Art!" and some were appalled at the thought of calling it art... some were just appalled.

Is Jackass art? I don't know. Nobody can provide a universal definition of art, only individual. Some think Jackass it is worthless and some think it is genius.. some just funny. Who cares. I like green.

I think the point here is not if Jackass is good/bad funny/dysfunctional. The point is that it is not just a funny "thing" to go see to get a laugh.... it is a cinematic hit in America. IMHO most blockbuster movies today suck, flat out. Art in cinema is being replaced by shock acts and repeat offenders that lack originality. It's all about eye candy, big names, and $$. Thank goodness festivals are popping up everywhere at the same time.

Zacariah had a point in spite of his hastily lettered missive; the profit margin on the media in question is surely impressive when compared to some blockbusters. No doubt they've doubled their production budget and even their advertising budget several times over by now.

i guess the studios will see the profit as a signal to make more and more.. how wonderful.. maybe this will all be a trend leading to a new style of cinema.

Yeah, just start releasing everyone's home movies.

This is just the movie version of reality TV. It sucks, but if people don't get to see anything else, they start to think it's good.

Jackass belongs on youtube.

the jackass stars will become idols if its popularity continues.. maybe they already are.

When has this Hollywood Business model ever been any different? As far as I knew-- If a certain type of "film" or "movie" succeeds the producers want to put out more... It's no different than the people putting out SAW clones or HOSTELS.

No different than the surge of imported Kung Fu movies stamped with Tarantino's named that go straight to the big screen.

Jackass was just a movie to sit and laugh at. The box office numbers just showed that despite everything that's "wrong" right now... people still want to go out, forget, and laugh.

What's so wrong with that?

"All good art is entertainment and anyone who says differently is a stuffed shirt and juvenile at the art of living"

... That is something I don't agree. What is the definition of Entertainment? Saying "all good art is entertainment"must imply first the knowledge of what is "good art". Also, it limits the so called "good art"to the "entertainment" concept. Very limiting, in my opinion.

As for Jakass, certainly it is entertainment. And people that go see this entertainment know what they are going for when they enter the movie theatre. But calling this cinema? That's another story. Its more of an entertainment program projected in movie theatres. Nothing more.

It's like calling cockfighting a sport...

Agreed. Where all the other complete crap seems to gather. Complete garbage. The sad thing is that there were enough idiots who watched in on TV, to convince them to put it out on a big screen. Then there were enough idiots who paid for that to convince them to put out a second one. Makes you want to sit down and start smoking crack. Kill less brain cells.

Most movie goers go to be entertained. Sure they will complain about the lack of depth in movies, but how many of those people are going to or viewing movies that do have depth and layers and are artistic as well as entertaining? Not many.

Have things really changed that much? I don't think so, while we remember the greats and ask why they don't make movies like that anymore, there is a messload of "crap" that has been forgotten and rightfully so. Same thing will happen with the movies of our time, when future generations look at them.

I think anyone can call anything art, and I guess some can consider cock fighting a sport. In the end, the fail to compare to "true" art.

Meh, far too many people skipped out on the limited release of The Science of Sleep.

I drove up from Long Beach to LA on its opening night, battling closed freeways and traffic.... and got there too late and it was sold out. I didn't have the heart to try again after that. I really hope it gets wide release.

I hope so too, I am lucky enough to have gone and it was completely sold out. I saw no further release dates, I think we may have to wait for DVD to see it again or for the first time. I am hoping I am wrong, so if anybody knows of another release, please feel free to inform me.

Its entertainment. There isn't that much else out in theatres right now, especially that will appeal to the masses. Spike Jonzes produced, what can ya say, its a money maker.

As most of you have said, it's pure, mind-numbing entertainment. Not art, not high concept, not cinema, just entertainment. Although there are certainly some high concept films that also qualify as entertainment, I don't think they all HAVE to. Some things are pure art, while others are pure entertainment. Personally, I think the greatest films satisfy both of these constraints. Jackass however, is simply entertainment... and there's nothing wrong with that.

And, if you know me, I hate everything about young people and my entire generation's tastes in movies and music.

To watch a bunch of naive punk idiots worship these morons poking a fish hook through their cheek... well quite frankly I get worried and very pissed.
