underage smoking in movies

Alright so I'm in high school and we have a local film festival coming up. So story that I have includes high schoolers smoking pot. In the story they're smoking it through a makeshift pipe made out of a pop can. So then I could just use like grass or oregano or somethin and just light it on fire and have the actors pretend to smoke it, but then no smoke would come out. I don't know, any suggestions?

By the way, all the actors are under 18 too.

As long the festival isn't a school function, you should be alright. Put a warning either at the begining at the end saying that all illiceit substances are improvised.

I don't smoke anything either, but the characters in the story do.

I called the people organizing the festival and told them my idea and they said that having drugs, etc. would be fine as long as I wasn't actually using drugs in the process and I put a disclaimer.

I mean I can do everything w/ just regular grass but we just wont have any smoke coming out. I don't know, would sucking in smoke from burning grass without inhaling it be dangerous? I mean it sounds stupid but it'd solve the problem.

In my view, to pull off the shot convincingly, your characters will have to inhale and exhale some sort of smoke. I smoke evreything and that is my personal choice, though I do NOT recomend others follow suit! Having said that I find your question amusing in this respect...Let's say it was not smoking pot we were dealing with but drinking scotch. In my view, alchohol is far better suited to danger and demonic possesion than pot ever could be but this is my view and my epitaph may totally contradict the wisdom. There was at one time a product on the market touted as legal pot, as I recall it was made from lettuce or some such thing. What you need to find is a substance that is both legal and non invasive or minimally to the respitory system. I beleive if you research it you will find some herbs that can be smoked and even be benificial. The only other way to deal with the shot in my view would be FX or ecu's of smoke leaving a mouth belonging to that of a real time smoker.

I second the hookah suggestion. I'm not a smoker, but I have heard that hookah is pretty safe, and doesn't have much of a risk to it. I guess it even comes in flavors....

Yea, hookah is safe, but it just doesn't have the same effect for the audience as weed does.

is there some way to fake the hookah as weed? Like show some spice that looks like weed, and then use the hookah for the actual smoke? is there a difference visually between hookah smoke and weed smoke?

Why not make a joint-looking cigarette with tobacco and some rolling paper.
Then make the bong out of the "pop" can, and they can actually inhale it/exhale it. If your actors don't want to smoke, or if they are afraid that they'll get addicted, tell them that one cigarette won't get them addicted. People these days are so afraid of smoking they don't even know the real facts.

That's not really a question. You can smoke weed out of a hookah, or a makeshift pipe out of a coke can.

What about using herbal cigarettes ? Over here in the UK, there's a brand called Honeyrose. They are sold in health food shops and look identical to standard cigarettes. The main difference is that the smoke is very weak in terms of what it feels like when in the mouth or throat. For a long term cigarette smoker like me, it was almost like there was no smoke coming out of them, even though there was. Maybe you could use something like this by removing the herbs (don't ask me what they are, but they're definitely not nicotine or cannabis), or the mixture which is similar to rolling tobacco. :)

* edit - right, just had a look on their website, and it says,

Herbal cigarettes, even though they look like real cigarettes, don't produce a cannabis-like high. The script probably requires the characters to get high.

I think you're missing the point of film making. He can do one shot with the smoke coming out of their mouth and another with a close-up of the "weed" it's not necessary for the ACTOR to get HIGH. Their acting!

This is a great thread. I'd just add that cloves, re-rolled into a joint would give a better oily appearance as they burn. Tobacco has a decidedly dry burn to it, while marijuana is almost damp below the lit end.

I say that you should have the actors all clear it with their parents and light up for the sake of your art.

Hahahaha

First time i visit dvxuser in over a month and this is the first thread i read

i havent actually laughed out loud at 'teh intranets' in some time

anyways - get closeups of them blowing out the smoke, and maybe have them hold it in at some point, with the joint in their hands and have them blow out after pretending to take a hit

bada bing bada boom
