I love this tripod combo!!!

Hey Travis, nice footage.

What is exactly your combo?
I've tried to read back on the thread but got lost with some many combinations.

And, if is not asking too much, how it weights?

Again, great footage! Nice job on the pulling that focus.

Thank you! Thank you! Sir, I shot that footage over Lobster Creek Bridge. I love 720/24pn!!! I am just hooked on that setting as much as that tripod.

As for weight, I 11 pounds if I recall but I will double check! :)

How's the leg latch/extendo mechanism work? Is it easy to realease, adjust and re tighten? Yes, I saw that same set up at Abelcine and thought it was sweet and wanted to buy it. But I got scared and ran and ran.

Scared of what? Price?

Hello, I bought the Miller Solo VJ tripod and Cartoni Focus just like on your post.

Am I supposed to purchase an additional cup or something? One thing I noticed was that the head slides around when I take off the bottom Cartoni screw and put the unit into the Miller Solo set up. The head fits on it nicely, but is it supposed to have a cup or a bowl or something to lock it in place so that it actually can have traction to use the central panning or is it just supposed to loosely lie on the tripod?

I am new to tripods so I don't know anything about this.

I also don't like how the Focus head when tilting seems to have a spring that brings the head back to its original position. Sometimes I just want it to tilt and lock in place. And the unit also seems to have a lot of resistance. Is it supposed to do this? Is my unit defective? Or am I just not used to this type of item? I've used the Bogen Manfrotto tripods before and the head and tilting seemed to move easily and stay where you put them.

Yes, it seems I should have read the thread carefully. I bought my tripod and head from BHPhoto and they sent me the head but the tripod seems to have the stock tie down. I reread the post and realized the tie down piece goes through the head mounting hole and that's why it won't hold the head in place. I called the Cartoni USA distributor (STE-MAN, 818 760 8240, North Hollywood) to swap it out for the wider Cartoni Delta tie-down cup (Part # D415) [SEE PAGE 2 OF THIS THREAD] and they said that it was about $100 or so typically for a replacement but since they know this is becoming a big problem for end-users that purchase based on DVXUser recommendations and it's costing them extra to ship these replacement units out for free they are going to have to charge or arrange something with the stores so this doesn't keep happening.

For all new tripod buyers, be aware of this extra step that you may have to encounter. The tie down cup thing is the black long knob at the end of the long metal rod with threads.

I also ordered the tripod and head without reading closely about the need for the Delta tie-down cup. I just spoke with Jeff at STE-MAN and he said there is a $20 cost difference between the cups. I paid with credit card over the phone and he is shipping the replacement cup out to me right away. When I receive it, I will ship the old cup back to them. Mostly painless, but I've lost at least a week and $20 for not reading this thread more closely.

Hi there I33 and Eric!

I'm so sorry you guys had inconvenience with this, I bought mine through AbelCine. And it appears they already took care of it before I ever received it, so I never had the problem and never covered it in my original post.

If you don't mind I am going to rephrase/insert some of you commentary to a footer at the bottom of the original post. So nobody else will have this problem.

One thing is for sure, AbelCine definitely takes the little extra step. They are not just a box store shoving the stuff in and slapping a label on. They have been conistently good to me.

Also worth taking a look at is the Miller 'Sprinter' Tripod (with 100mm bowl).

The design is feaured, functional, practical and versatile. Both leg extensions are done from same point without bending your back, illuminated level bubble, balanced carry handle , adjustable high level spreader, ruber and pointed feet, lightweight. (available in aluminium or C/Fibre).

Had one for a few weeks and it has proved to be excellent in studio and the field.

Well, as I noted above, I bought mine from AbelCine but they blew it in my case, and I lost a week. It didn't get straightened out until I got tired of waiting and contacted the distributor directly myself. (But at least they had the combo in stock when nobody else did.) So, even with AbelCine, insist on the Delta cup up front!

Travis,

I ordered my Cartoni/Miller combo and should get it Friday. I'm gonna blow up some beaver dams, if it's not all you say it is!!!:)

Thanks for all your help!

Right On Man!!!

Hey, glad to hear you went with AbelCine. Just be prepared, it may be light buts its a tuff and chunky tripod. I used mine as a rain shelter while shooting on the river with the legs all the way out. Ahhhh, the joy of spreader free legs!

Hmmm ... I found this thead and thought ... Fantastic!

I put a the "Please use the #D415 tie down cup" in my Wish list.

I also emailed the "Please use the #D415 tied down cup" when responding as part of the email ordering dialogue from B&H.

Turned up yesterday with a stock tie down cup.

Maybe B&H need a 'knowledge module' built into their odering system that makes the packer aware that customers have had issues / or that the parts that are requested are incompatible and need a different part to be shipped.

Hi Antony,

They'll need a bigger module than that. AbelCine is the place for this kind of thing, really. Nobody's perfect, but from repeat experience I try to minimize my dealings with B&H as much as absolutely possible.

Sorry you had the headache with this....

I'm really thinking of getting this combo. Anyone knows anywhere you can get it except B&H that can ship internationally (and even with the tie down cup)?

In my email discusssion with B&H, the offered to ship back the Cartoni head with the Standard Tie-down cup at their expense.

They stated that they do not sell the #D514 cup in place of the standard cup.

Had i realised this, I would have avoided waisting their support time, and bought the Cartoni from a company that was able to provide me with what I had requested the first time around.

------

In this instance, I contacted the following company in the Uk to see if they could help me (I'm in the UK at the moment).

http://www.paguk.com/ (Spoke to Sarah Lavendar)

Their level of customer service is Amazing.

They sorted my issue out with Cartoni directly.
I can't recommend them enough.

Antony.

Does anyone know how the Sachtler DV6 SB compares to the Cartoni Focus beyond being about twice as expensive? Is it worth the $700 or so for the Sachtler? I own the SOLO DV5 Carbon Fiber Tripod System and want to upgrade fluid heads and am debating between the two. Thanks for the advice.

This is worth a bump and reminder. I'd recommend going with AbeCine, but for those of us bears with little brains (who went elsewhere hoping to save a few bucks), I'd suggest calling STE-MAN (see above), dial 0 for the operator and ask for Jeff in parts. He's still very gracious about exchanging the parts for the $ 20. difference in parts. Please be aware that other strategies may not work. I even gave the heads up about this problem when I ordered and sent a reminder later by email and they still got it wrong and insisted that I'd have to buy the new tie-down for $ 85.

The product is still in transit, so I haven't tried it yet...
