How do I create a letter-box effect in FCP?

Go under effects>video filters>matte>widescreen. Once you applied the effect to your clip you can go under the filter tab in the viewer and adjust the ratio or the offset to best suit the look your going for.

Remove the "close parenthesis" at the end. Then it should work fine.

If you need to apply a letterbox effect to mulitple clips, all you need to do apply it to one clip, then select the clip and go under edit>copy then de-select that clip and select all of the other clips you want to apply the filter to. Then go under edit>paste attributes and select the check box for filters to apply the widescreen filter to all the selected clips.
