A sad state in American Cinema ?

Jackass Number 2 is the Box Office king and The RomaCinemaFest snubs all U.S. titles in the competition

Madness. Originality has lost it's place in American Cinema for the time being.

Art as a whole has lost its value among the masses amidst today's Kitsch.

I look at art like I look at psychics. If a psychic truly had the power... to say... talk to the other side, it doesn't make any sense that the person's primary goal would be to make $$ (cough, couch, John Edwards). In the same way, if something is created with the primary purpose of making money (cough, cough, Thomas Kinkade), then it leaves the realm of art as far as I'm concerned and becomes Kitsch... AKA sh!t.

There will always be those that have an appreciation for art though, so I don't see it ever being completely buried... it is just temporarily stained at the moment in America... esp in terms of cinema.

jackass is genious. i havent seen number two but ive seen the numbers it made opening weekend and i must say.. its genious. how much could it possibly cost to make.. shot on video...pay cast and crew.. post pay.. and cash for wrecking vehicles.. making exlosives so on...how much it is making compared to how much it was shot for is just outstanding.. kinda like a blair witch thing.

Well, you know.... some things are meant for entertainment purposes only, others for artistic purposes. A particular medium is not reserved for one or the other. Jackass, is meant for entertainment purposes only. There are those who are entertained by it. But let's be honest. "ART" in film in television has been in the minority of what gets out there since... well, basically the advent of film and telivision. You want "art" in the performance art medium, you might be alittle more likely to see some semblance of it in the theatre (live). But, it is pretty much the same story there as well.
I don't know. I just look at jackass as a part of the entertainment genre. It doesn't disturb me too much. Most of the stuff out there is crap (in large majority), whether it was intended as art or entertainment. But, regardless... it is still a business. Without an audience, it ain't art. If you are "only" making it for yourself, it isn't art. It is just a form of self-gratification (whether spawned from "noble" purposes or not). An actor in the theatre isn't doing anything if they are performing for themselves, right?

*nobody remembers the "jackass" stuff in the long run. it is the stuff with meat and substance that sticks with someone and withstands the test of time, and transcends the medium it was generated on. Like a good steak :)

genius is one of those words you don't want to misspell. and here i even think its misapplied. if jackass is genius, then so is any other hit exploitation movie.

i dont think jackass is entertainment or cinema.

sad really.

but who do you blame.. the producers or the public?

jackass is genious

i have loads more respect for the producers and creators of jackass than i do for the soulless check-cashers behind The Guardian.

those are the types responsible for the "sad state of American Cinema"

And to cite jackass in any discussion of "art" is ridiculous. jackass never claims to be art. that's the brilliance of it. simplicity. doesn't matter if you're an ivy league grad or a high school drop out, seeing a guy jump from a trampoline into a fast running ceiling fan is funny.

it's every bad decision you made with your drunk buddies in college taken to the extreme.

besides, i think you give the average american far too much credit. 95% of people in this country are glorified cattle that don't like to think about their lives. jackass provides entertainment to that vast majority, and i for one have no problem letting the slow kids stare at the shiny objects.

why should you?

and when did it become true that all valid arguments must be spelled correctly?

its dumb... pure and simple. watching people shock their testicles is fun? WTF?

I blame the idiots who want to do the stupid **** they do. It's not fun, it's not entertainment... it's DUMB! I can't believe people want to watch that **** they do.... it's sad

Look- I thought Jackass was dumb. But I laughed. Dont judge me.

But when people say that is good american cinema, but think it Inherit the Wind is a stupid, boring movie- let them burn for it.

Well at least no one wants to punch them in the face for doing that - they're totally capable of doing that to themselves and worse. I mean they're paying themselves back for unleashing this unto the public.

At least unlike uwe boll they acknowledge the fact that they are crap
