Let's list some Music Video cliches!

well now you can put it on there twice. :)

how bout bosses yelling at the employee, who is usually the lead singer in the video. Personally i side with the boss, because the employee is always day dreaming about being in a band and not working.

I agree with many of these, but there are SO many listed that it seems like they are no longer cliches. It looses some credibility when everything is a problem...

I don't know. There's a lot of cliches in music videos. That list barely scratches the surface. But they are used over and over because they work. People just like them. I've used or will use a few of them. Kinda similar to using archetypes for characters. Its what people can identify with. Maybe thats a bad example, I don't know.

I just thought it would be fun to list how many recurring themes and stuff we could all throw out there.

I'm going back to the early 80's ("I want my MTV" - since then they've forgotten who I am!) It's the reason we got cable at that time.

Have we forgot about the over use of fog machines - singer always performing in a layer of fog.

How about the singer/band is at a photographers studio during a photo shoot while they're singing or playing and having this photographer taking pictures as they pose.

Movie soundtrack music videos - one part music video intercut with one part movie trailer.

Spandex - need I say more.

I know it was mentioned before, but ya gotta go with the mini concert music video. Band on stage as if it was there mega arena setup, performing in a studio for only the cameras or a very energetic small audience.

that all I can think of for now.

Fog and fire. critical to any video :)

Band is in the recording studio performing the song as if it was the first time they are playing it

has slow motion singing been said yet?

I don't think cliches are a bad thing because every good thing turns into a cliche. Whatever cliche(s) is being used in the video, if it fits and makes the song better, then there's no "crime" being committed.

Dude mark harris ( desperatecomfort) and i have a new rule... we dont shoot without a fogmachine...... any project i dont care how big.

Yeah one of the guys from DieMonsterDie was fanatical about having a fog machine in every shot on their video. It was driving me mad. I finally had to rebel and just say no to the man which caused some tension. But it all worked out.

Sigh.... rappers waking up, brushing teeth, and just walking around everywhere rapping ... like watching them doing mundane things is at all interesting. This was a 90's staple as well. The horror. :)
